This was the helmet that I bought when I returned to motorcycling. I was attracted by the looks and the relatively light weight - along with the comfort. Having a large odd-shaped head (the professional opinion years ago of a stores bloke in the RN when I was trying to get a flying helmet that fitted comfortably) it can difficult to find a helmet that fits properly and is comfortable at the same time. The BMW Enduro was recommended to me as a good helmet for everyday use and that is exactly what I found it to be.

I used it in all weathers and the only problems that I encountered were some visor misting in very wet weather and some vibration from the peak at speed but nothing that caused me to want to buy another helmet. Construction seems to be very solid and the double-d ring fixing is secure and has a press stud to secure the loose end, a nice touch. The tag on the d-rings on my helmet began to fray slightly after about 6 months but was solved by the judicious application of heat and a few stitches.

The vision I found to be very good and the light weight a positive advantage, reducing neck strain. The peak has some small adjustment and was very effective at blocking glare from the sun - it is easily removable if you want to do so as is the visor if you want to use goggles. I found it quick and easy to switch between visor and goggles using just a coin. Should you wish to wear glasses or sunglasses with the helmet then the the lining/padding is very accommodating and provides comfort whatever the weather - and the lining is apparently removable and washable if needed although I never did this myself. Ventilation is good but basic and I only had visor misting problems in very wet weather as I mentioned before. My wife also has an Enduro helmet in a more normal size and is very pleased with it.

Most importantly I can report that it provides excellent protection and when helmet met road my head came through the encounter unscathed. In fact, the only sign of contact was paint from the white lines on the helmet and a small area of scratching. And at the end of the day this is the reason why we wear helmets - for protection.

The BMW Enduro helmet is the first helmet I bought when I started riding 3/4 years ago. I have since also bought a system 5 and a system 6 - and yet, it is the Enduro that I use the most. For my riding, I ride to work most days, tour with the girlfriend and ride a fair amount off road and it serves all of these purposes very well.

There are a couple issue - it is possible to have the peak to far forward leading to scratches on the visor when fully open (fix: just don't have the peak all the way forward!); the rubber seal around the visor can detoriate - mine went after 25,000 miles - it just means that the seal is not so great.

On the plus side:

I had a Arai Tour X.I liked it!It was comming up 3 years old and had been used for what it was designed for on several occasions on the BMW off road course, namely saving my bonce!
The obvious thing to do was just to replace it like for like. However on a visit to my BMW dealer the Enduro took my eye.The helmet itself looked the part felt nice on and was light to wear. The antifog coating also was very appealing.I bought on an impulse. My idea was to keep the Tour X for every day and the Enduro for Tours and days out.
The Enduro is a terrible touring helmet anything over 40 MPH results in the peak vibrating causing a most annoying buzz constantly in the helmet which results in the vox setting of an Autocom usless. The same is true if you ride with the visor up,both are just too damn flimsy. The anti fog coating is totally overwhelmed in rain and goes opaque thus making one have to raise the visor, rain in the face and worse on your glasses,if you wear them. The rain then gets on to the inside of the visor and that then is not possible to wipe dry.The front chin piece padding relies on friction from the cheekpads to keep in place and that friction is easily overcome by wind and vibration after a day in the saddle.
When tried on in the store the Enduro feels like a well made HiTec helmet but when used in real life its a cheap Christmas cracker gift.Anyone asking me about helmet recommendations would be told to steer well clear of the BMW Enduro.Gets a 1 for performance because the only way to get a breeze thru the front is open the visor.
You will see that I gave it a 10 for protection this is because I can only assume it fulfills all the legal requirements and I have not had cause to put it to its intended use.Reliability is a 2 due to the poor antifog and padding.Scores 1 for value it's a £35.00 Lidl helmet with a BMW price tag hell I had an FM in 1987 that was streets ahead. But does look good so 9.
BMW go look at Arai and Shoei(and take Schuberth with you!).

Impulse buying? Ouch!

Next time your wife comes home with another pair of shoes you wont have a leg to stand on! When choosing helmets it pays to use your head not your heart and when you are wearing it you cant see how "smart" it looks anyway! Tour X3? Only way to go!

Not My Experience
0
Having used a BMW Enduro for over a year I was amazed by some of the comments in this review.

Mine is used for 12 months of the year in all weathers for commuting and has also been worn for trips to Eastern Europe. I have not experienced any problems with the peak at speeds up to 125 mph and can still listen to music and hear bike to bike radio messages at speeds up to 100. I was told I may have to remove the peak at high speed but have found that un-necessary. Its performance in rain is vastly better than my previous BMW System 5 and Schuberth C. Both of these helmets misted badly but the Enduro stays clear with the visor closed even when worn in cold rain after being kept in a warm airing cupboard.

Finally I have never had a problem with liners, chin piece or anything else. In fact my wife recently wanted a new helmet and bought the Enduro after my glowing recommendation.

I must agree with "not my experience". This is an excellent helmet, and I have not had the problems listed above at all. I have used mine for over two years, enjoyed it tremendously, while listening to music continuously at over 120km/h (with rubberised in-ear phones like Skull Candy, Froggz or the ones that come with certain Sony Music cellphones) - I have done over 30 000km both on and off-road, and recently had an accident, where my head got quite a whack - no visible damage to the helmet whatsoever (nor to me, thankfully). Three very strong complaints I DO have though are 1) Quality: The ratchet-like component which holds the visor in place wears down too easily. 2) Quality: The top screw for adjusting the peak stripped early on, and so it would keep defaulting to the foremost position, which leads to point 3) Design: When the peak is in the foremost position, it marks the visor when the visor is raised. So the only way to prevent the visor from being scratched is to have the peak set to the rear position, which is impossible if the setting-screw happens to have stripped!! Very poor oversight for such an expensive and otherwise high quality helmet.

After my crappy x3' I'll try anything!
Death by Monkey
Aria really 'mist' a trick with the X3 in my opinion. I have no issues with it in the dry (other than cheek pads that are 1-2 inches too short)
It is in the cold and wet conditions it goes to pot. Several different visors, inserts, set-ups from my local dealer and the Arai truck at the NEC later, and as soon as the weather App forecasts rain, out comes the trusted old Vision. I am looking for a new all year round peaked enduro helmet now, the x3 will be confined to enduro stuff only. Is really disappointing as it cost £ 300 in 2008. Just never understood why Arai never ventilated the actual visor itself, like other helmets. Is a school boy error me thinks,

Any suggestions on it's possible replacement?

Your wish etc etc

The latest Tour X3s have "eyebrow" vents on the visor which I am assuming will fit straight onto an older version of the helmet which will be a lot cheaper than buying a new helmet although at 4 years old you may well have to. I'll be checking this out as in extreme wet/fog I have had the same problems not helped by also wearing glasses! It is important to make sure the pinlock is properly fitted. I refitted mine and warmed everything up with a hairdryer during reassembly which has improved things.

Nice helmet but not enough vents for warm weather
jayson
Used it in 34degrees plus and not enough vents. Head vents didn't seem to do anything compared to airflow pulled in by my shoei, and chin vent demists fine but did not cool at all. Problem Solved by taking out the chin cuff and polystyrene section of padding from chin bar, but this was glued in. So bit extreme !

I would have thought an enduro helmet would have lots of cooling vents. I would also guess in winter I would want option to close chin vent, I have read about other people putting duct tape over to keep cold out, but it's a bit poor fix.

Good vents that can be opened and closed on a £400 helmet isn't too much to ask is it?
