I have both models and both have weak points, the driveshaft can fail on the paralever GS at low mileage, solution is to fit a shorter shock from an R100R and rebuildable shaft.
Monolever G/S has small seat and original tank giving small range, seat can be modified, bigger tanks available, GS one fits straight on. Forks can be weak and fracture under bottom yoke if abused, again GS forks fit as do many others.
Both have inadaquate single disc, G/S has lugs for second disc, worth doing, GS can have leg with lugs modified to fit other side or 4 and 6 piston calipers available. GS rear drum is crap, G/S drum is ok.
Either is still a good all rounder, if you can find one at the right price.
My GS I've had from new and has done 150,000 miles with an overhaul at 100,000.
The G/S was one previous who took it rtw two up, and after a rebuild at 120,000 miles took me 20,000 troiuble free, long way up miles.
I have not given them particularly high marks for some things, but they are a greater bike than the sum of their parts.
"Classic" status makes them overpriced but they should hold their value.
They seem more reliable than latest GS, easier and cheaper to fix.

Would like to buy GS but need more info.
Bruce
I am interested in buying a G650 GS single or F650 Twin but concerned about engine vibration. Is the older Rotax single better or smoother or less problems? Any ideas are appreciated, thanks, Bruce in FL
