How to ride off-road on the Portugal ACT, a paradise for adventure biking

Have you ever wanted to take your adventure bike cross-country and tackle gravel tracks, water crossings, rocky river beds, and cobbled Roman roads on a multi-day expedition?

Well, that’s exactly what Adventure Country Tracks, or ACT, had in mind when it set out to develop a network of routes across Europe that take in a mixture of exciting off-road tracks and twisting tarmac roads.

Unlike the Trans Euro Trail (TET), these routes are designed for big adventure bikes, and while there are challenging sections, the routes are suitable for riders with basic off-road skills.

One of the best ACT routes is in Portugal, where 65% of the route is off-road, and there’s a glorious mixture of mountain passes, verdant valleys, and open plains as you traverse remote parts of the country.

Along the way, you’ll ride through small villages, cross ancient Roman bridges, and pass historic castles. Having ridden in Portugal, I can assure you that the country is home to some of the most enjoyable riding found anywhere in the world.

But what’s the best way to actually get out there and do it? Well, that’s where MotoGT comes in.

Recognising that there’s a demand for a mix of on and off-road adventures, they’ve joined forces with Adventure Country Tracks as an approved tour partner to provide an authentic adventure experience.

So, instead of simply following a tour guide,  MotoGT is dedicated to building a team and giving each person a chance to lead the group, navigate, act as a sweeper, as well as carrying out other responsibilities throughout the trip.

Off-road training is also provided by expert instructor Diogo Guerra to help you make the most of the trails, along with general guidance on adventure riding by the rest of the team, so it’s the perfect way to build your skills and confidence.

MotoGT also provide a support vehicle that’s got tools and spare bikes, so you won’t have to worry about breakdowns, and you’ll also be able to store your gear in the van during the day, so you can focus on enjoying your riding.

Plus, you’ll have the chance to camp or stay in local accommodation along the way and sample regional food and drink, so you’ll experience the real Portugal as you travel through the country.
