The Road of BonesFor complete blog entry and expedition photos visit www.londontomagadan.comA couple of days R&R in Yakutsk’s finest hotel was enjoyed by all. A few of us visited the unique Permafrost museum which isn’t as bad as it sounds.   Beautiful sceneryFull of anticipation for the ride on the Road of Bones we crossed the Lena River once more and began the 2000km ride to Magadan, all on dirt. The road was a mix of loose gravel and limited sand areas through the vast forest of the Taiga. The traffic had becom...

Set out for my next point and has I was just leaving Ardagh the  Garda (Irish Police) pulled me over. Switching off the bike and wondering what the hell I’d done, a lone cop gets out and comes over to me smiling. “Just seen you taking photos, Doing the photo rally ar ye?”. With a  nod for the head to confirm I remove my helmet. He was doing the rally himself so if was “How much have you done so far?” Where are you headed now? Having answered  It turns out he rides a 1150GS .Said he would be doing the...

Been doing the Irish Photographic Rally this year and decided to do the ones in Counties Longford, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway in a day. Up with the sun and a hearty breakfast throw a few things like stove and tea bags into the top box. Camera in tank bag and head out the door.  Trip over the cat trying to get in has I try and get out , the wife will find the note on the kitchen table, “See you later dear” It was a lot later. Headed across by Banbridge town and down into Armagh, A good road for the bike, some nice bends if it wasn’t for...

It was Tuesday morning, the Land Rover was packed full to bursting and we set off from our home in Central France, destination: Bavaria. We were due to meet friends at a camp site in Badkissengen the following evening. Two hours later, having stopped at a toll booth, ’im-who-thinks-he’s-in-charge , aka Darren (hubby), noticed a problem. We parked up to find coolant literally pouring from the radiator. On further inspection it became clear there was no way the Landy was going to make it to Bavaria anytime that week. After a temporary r...

Hi Everyone I'm quite new to the world of biking (having only been on the back of my partner's in the past year and a bit in total).  My partner, on the other hand, has an ongoing passion for motorbikes.   So far I have heard the partner mention the word 'farkling' (spelled correctly??).  From my limited understanding  'farkling' is what one does when one is attempting to add bits to the bike or when generally tinkering with it. 'RTW" is an obvious one I think...Round The World. In a bid to 'get in the know' a ...

Just nipping into Staples in Stratford... met three blokes on some seriously packed motorcycles. We have a biker's chat including such interesting things as the benefits of square box panniers.. and it turns out that these men are just setting of on a trip to the Alps! Alun Davies gave me a card for the website, and Ive just registered. What a great site, and local folk too. I've just come back from a trip to Ireland with a friend who comes from the Emerald Isle setting off from Mickleton, picking up my mate at Cirencester, off t...

I've just updated my video kit and took the plunge and bought Oregon Scientifics ATC5k, I did this because alot of people i know and trust have got previous model Scientifics and they seemed the most robust,  Essentially the series 5 is very similar with a couple of added new features, The viewing screen is a major bonus so you can check the angles and set up of your recordings, The expansion to 16GB is also very good especially if your going to go on a trip, and the new remote control feature sounded good.

Having tested it this week i am delighted and would recommend this to anyone, i have rated the key areas below hope its of interest

route 66The Chicago and Illinois Tourist office has launched a nationwide competition in search of the first ever Illinois Route 66 Ambassador. Having recently conducted a survey into the holiday habits of British tourists, research found that 86% sought more unique, experience-driven holidays that go beyond beach style vacations. Long-haul treks such as the Great Wall of China, thrill-seeking adventures like the climb to Everest Base Camp and iconic road trips such as Route 66, were top of the list.

To support this new insight, the Chicago and Illinois Tourist Office are recruiting the first ever Route 66 Ambassador from the UK. They will travel along legendary Route 66, experiencing everything it has to offer and then present their findings and recommendations to the British public via an online blog, consisting of photos and video snippets, housed on the www.gochicago.com website. This will let people see firsthand what’s on offer in a fun and engaging way, as well as the chance to learn everything they need to know about the route from a UK perspective.

triumph tiger 955In the process of writing up a test report on the Tiger 955i I think back to my first ride and in particular the strange case of the disappearing cockpit screens. Let me explain; the bike was advertised for sale by a guy up in Darlington, so, having pre-vetted the details over the phone and web I took the train up north expecting to complete the purchase and ride back down to Stratford upon Avon. About 250 miles in all.

Business completed, by 7pm I was on the M69 between Leicester and Coventry, within touching distance of the Triumph factory at Hinckley when the strangest thing happened. The day was drawing to a close, entering the murky period known as twilight, when I glanced down at the speedo and rev counter, rubbed my glove across my visor, and took a double take. All the marking indicators had disappeared, both the speedo and rev counter panels were glowing circles and it was impossible to read what speed I was travelling at or what my revs were. Spooky.

Touratech are hardly what you'd call a budget range, with some of their products priced beyond the eye-watering, pick me up off the floor level. Nice then, that as of today, the company has announced that it is implementing a price reduction between 10% and 13% across the full Touratech branded range. And fair play to the company they're also passing on the full price reduction to customers with all orders already in the system. Whilst on the subject of Touratech I suppose I'd better mention that the company are holding their annual travel ...

Perfect shopping bikeThis past weekend I took a ride out in search of some heavy duty porn, not the traditional sweat and grunt stuff you understand, but the latest motorcycle porn which comes in the form of the sensual Multistrada 1200.

Following a press launch in the Canary Island of Lanzagrotti the new Ducati has been universally acclaimed by the worlds biking press, in fact, other than a few complaints about the positioning of the centre stand I've struggled to find a word written in anything other than the sort of literary praise that's usually reserved for a complimentary bar at a free all you can ogle strip show.

The £14,000 asking price has hardly been mentioned, though there's surely a danger of an inflationary effect on the motorcycle world in general with other manufacturers upping their price to compliment the Multistrada – the new Yamaha Tenere 1200 looks a prime example. Unlike other expensive Ducati's this is not an elite sports bike aimed at buyers with more cash than a love of biking, this is a motorcycle aimed four square at the mainstream with advanced features which will become standard on all bikes over the next few years or so.

Checking back through this site I notice I wrote a blog last year on the23rd of March (2009) that went something like this...I bought a Triumph Tiger this past weekend. Ithought no more about it until I realised that on the 23rd of March this year (2010) .....I bought a Triumph Tiger. That's one hell of a coincidence.   So, with my Nostradamus head on I'm going to write my blog entry for 2011 today...I bought a Triumph Tiger. It's odds on that next year I'll complete my set of big cats and be the proud owner of, an 885 steamer, 95...

I have been forgiven, though not without a little reminder that a relationship should be nurtured and that you just can't expect to turn up, turn on and be as excited as before. A failed MOT was my 'silent treatment'. Still, a bit of shopping and it's all good again. It's been a personally  tough, long seven months with only a couple of ride out's on the KTM. It's not as if I've experienced some degree of enlightenment but as the day's get longer and warmer I can't help feeling happier when I think about getting out on the bike. Particularl...

I've been keeping an eye on Ebay GS's for months and there's usually between 10 and 20 for sale at any one time and whilst prices do appear to be dropping there's not been any what you'd call bargains.Well, as of today there are 46 BMW GS's for sale on Ebay and most have not even received one bid.And now, having consulted the sheep's entrails, here's my prediction....we're in for a GS price crash over the next 12 months. My best guess is that many of these bikes have been bought by born again bikers in the 'good times', when jobs were secure and...

How a dislike of flying and a loathing of airports teed up an annual pilgrimage to the Land of the Zepps Belgium’s an odd place. Plenty of beer and chocolate, but fuel seems a little rare when you’re trying to minimise your stops on a 150 mile range tank. But then Belgium wasn’t on my agenda when I set off on the dependable Yamaha Divvy 900, on the annual mega-commute from Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria to Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, the trade fair capital of Baden-Wurttemburg and home to Z...

Alun was quite determined to direct us to a small hamlet in germany which he once visited many moons ago, it is obvious that this was an absolute must and no trip near the alps is complete without a visit and photograph under this signpost, the challenge is can you get a photo at the same spot??, if so you could become a " wanker " just like us! ...

Living in the cultural Shakespearian Mecca that is Stratford-upon-Avon close to the home of the Bulldog Bash you would think that the whole town should open up to welcome the bikers and take advantage of the biker pound. However, it’s increasingly obvious that if you’re on two wheels then generally you’re not that welcome, in fact, you’re a bit of an aggravation. ‘Sorry, no bikers’ is always displayed outside one of the town centre pubs over that weekend, they must be so busy they don’t need any more ...
