Almost 70K miles on my "old" 2004 650 and beyond oil, filters, the occasional air filter and three chains I haven't spent much on any "additional" maintenance. 90% of my riding is 'pavement' with less than 10% of that on the slab (Freeway). Had mine for almost a year from new - replacing my ST1100 Pan European. What a different & far more enjoyable bike! Obviously lighter, far easier to handle in town traffic, responsive, comfortable, and a head turner! Excellent value for money - especially compared with similar rivals or Honda's Deauville which now retails at over £8,000. Givi & Kappa luggage completes the set up & is very easy to fit. If there's one thing I'm reluctant to praise is it's chain drive - but all my previous bikes have been shafts so I'm probably just being petty! Had my wee strom 2 years now, done 27K glorious comfortable miles with not one mechanical problem. The ride position is tall, great in town or traffic so you get a great view over the top of most vehicles.Economy is brill with it's 22l tank, never had less than 225 miles per tank, and that's flogging it,270-285 per tank round west coast Scotland ( 25-40mph ).Mine does not have ABS so servicing the caliphers is a doddle. In fact most work on the bike is pretty easy.Parts are easy to come by especially as most engine bits match the Suzuki SV650.I ride all seasons so regular servicing of brakes is a must or else corrosion does set in even with using all the usual rust inhibiters. dl650x5 of 5 people found the following review helpful
i had my dl650x for just over a year and did 2 tours of france about 8000 miles all in told , it was very quick for what it was and killed the miles off when we had to , handled off road fooling around no problem , good on fuel if you dont have a heavy right wrist , service costs are low .all in all a very good little big bike . I've taken my '05 75,000 miles through Africa, Europe, and North America and can vouch for what an amazingly versatile motorcycle this is, especially for the money. The aesthetics have grown on me and my only complaint is that I'm afraid I won't be able to find parts for it someday. Would definitely buy again in a heartbeat.

Hey Jim are you saying the above reviewers are dishonest? also if you are thinking the GS is a great off road bike you should have seen them being pushed out of this years Dragon Rally field! ( my mate did a better job on his VFR).Take a look at the GS forums and you will see all is not a bed of roses with the GS, and does not bode well for your expensive new purchase, By the way how do we know your an honest reviewer?

Hi, I think the DL650 is a great bike. Not been off road with it yet but I guess a good rider would get around on it.True it's not an out right off road machine, but it's affordable and inspires confidence and if it fuels someones dream and leads them onto great adventures, then its excelled. All bikes have + & - Have heard many complaints of the GS, build quality, gearbox and break troubles. These are hardly confidence inspireing reasons to buy a GS and do a RTW. Unless you are a professional, in which case your choice may well be a GS or KTM for instance.People have done and continue to ride all sorts of machines off road, and yes they will break down and probably fall to bits and need repairs along the way. As long as they have a dream and spirit then these are all part of thr adventure of motor cycling around the world. I would set off om my V Strom on a RTW without any hesitation, but then I would on a GS too. All the best, Ian
