Tata Veteran BVR Subbu was the man entrusted with building the Hyundai brand in India . And that's what he did, leaving Hyundai as the second largest car maker in India. Now, Subbu has focused his ambitions on a diesel engine manufacturing unit in Chennai called Altius Automotive Technologies.

Altius is partnered by Hayes Diversified Technologies, an American firm engaged in supply of military vehicles and equipment principally to the US Army. Hayes also was instrumental in fitting a 670cc diesel/multifuel engine onto the Kawasaki KLR650′s chassis to come up with the HDT Diesel Motorcycle for the US Army - the army wanted a single fuel to work across it’s vehicle range.

And that's the background to the motorcycle we’re talking about here, the Altius Scimitar 670 Diesel, which is set to launch in India in 2012. What you get is essentially the enduro frame of a Kawasaki KLR650 mated to a 670cc multifuel diesel engine designed by HDT.

It's an indirect diesel engine hooked up to a five speed manual gearbox, the engine is slow revving but good for about 33 Bhp and the torque output is 54 Nm.  Altius claims to achieve 96mpg at a constant 56mph giving a potential tank range of 408 miles. The price of the Altius Scimitar 670 is set to be around £2400.

Be interesting to see if they make it to the UK. I wouldn't mind buying one.

The amount of commuting miles I do, this would pay for itself, at today's prices, pretty quickly; looks good too.

I think that they'd sell plenty over here

think its a great idea would buy one if they came here at that price you could afford two! Did'nt enfield make a diesel bike in the 90's using a diesel waterpump engine mounted into an enfield 350 frame?

Really? You fancy being as short on passive safety as you are on a bike but without the active safety benefits? - it takes 9.7 seconds to get to sixty! Good observation is one thing but you still have to be able to respond! (Perhaps it's OK off road - if you get that far....)

I'd have one, no probs!! If the blurb is to be believed, it's a multi-fuelled bike, which (I'm guessing) means you could also use bio-diesel or a 50/50 mix of dino-diesel & veg oil.

Great commuter
keithblade
With todays fuel costs and the price of the bike I would have that as a cheap commuter, it would also save the miles on my Tenere. Would consider one withoout a doubt.

Green laner? I reckon it would do that too especially if it is designed for the military.

Bring it on!

Makes so much sense..Been saying this for years..more range per tank. plus lighter fuel load..more reliable.cheaper per mile..a big plus for long distance etc..and diesel far easier to find in out of way places, out of fuel in the desert? i bet the vehicle that first finds you will be a toyota on diesel or a lorry..The bike will also run on old engine oil or veg oil at a push.
It may be slower than petrol but speed is the last thing needed on a true adventure bike..
Will also make a good commuter..come on bmw, your turn..

You know, I think I've displayed my predjudices on this one... have to acknowledge my ignorance on the green and bumpy stuff, and there's obvously a case for these things judging by more learned opinions. smilies/smiley.gif

You're right to point out the 0-60 time though, Doggo. It probably would seem like an eternity, especially after riding petrol driven bikes. But when you consider that it would be seen as reasonable if it were a car accelerating in that time it doesn't seem so bad any more. Some cars take as much as 15 secs or more to get to 60mph, and small scooters don't even get to 40!! I think diesel bikes do need more development, but if no-one buys into them now, that development simply won't happen.

Price £2400 eh? That'd make it £6500 if and when it gets to the UK...

There's another diesel bike with a Smart engine in a KTM frame methinks...?

I have been in contact, if you can call it that. with this company for years since they first advertised thier bike ( my Avatar ) they are , in thier words FULLY COMMITED to supplying the USA military, the forum that is supposed to keep us updated with information on the forth coming CIVILLIAN version is not happening. On the site they offer a 250 petrol bike now, as well as Military Options http://www.hayes-dt.com/
