Remember TV's sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf? If so, you may remember the charismatic Cat (aka actor Danny John-Jules). Besides a host of sharp-looking suits, it also seems there’s a motorcycle lurking at the back of the Cat’s closet – and he’s about to bust it out in a new TV series for Extreme Sports Channel.
Motorbike Diaries: Mad in the Med will see the entire Red Dwarf cast reunited again, as Danny teams up with entrepreneur and adventurer Graham Hoskins on a 7,000-mile motorcycle trip through 15 countries in 15 days in aid of Sport Relief. Former fellow space cadets Craig Charles, Robert Llewellyn and Chris Barrie provide comedy support as they commentate on the duo’s progress through three continents on their circumnavigation of the Mediterranean Sea.
“The purpose of the trip was to prove that you don’t need three months, loads of money and make up trucks to have a life-changing, multi-continent spanning adventure,” explains Hoskins, who completed a 4,000-mile round trip to Moscow in just seven days in 2005, to raise money for Children in Need. “Plus I love motorbikes, travel, and adventure and wanted to make a TV programme about it.”
“The best thing about the trip was that I had time to rediscover my zest for life,” says John-Jules, who’s been riding motorcycles for 13 years and owns a Yamaha R1. “I’d had a rough year previously and was looking to kick-start my metabolism back to how it used to be. As the song says, ‘I've got a new attitude’ and it's all to do with the Med experience.”
