Update to “Legal tips: Are you insured to ride green lanes?”

As with most aspects of the law, they can change with the times. In the run up to ABR Festival 2024 Gavin Grewal, Managing Partner of White Dalton Motorcycle Solicitors issues an update to the article below:

Following Brexit, the UK government was free to take back control of its own laws and is not always required to follow the European Court of Justice. One change came in the form of the Motor Vehicles (Compulsory Insurance) Bill. The case of Vnuk referred to [in the original article] is no longer good law in the UK. This means that insurers do not need to provide compulsory insurance cover for use on private land.

What does this mean for bikers attending the ABR? Check your policy terms carefully! You are unlikely to have automatic cover but may be able to purchase extra cover.

Whilst I cannot advise on what insurers you should use (I am a Solicitor and not an insurance broker) I have seen policies offering Show and Event type cover. It is worth checking with the insurer whether this bolt on will cover you riding on private land, such as Ragley Hall Estate.

For those of you who want to do some further reading, please see these features here and here.

I will be at ABR 2024, see you there.
