Ride Africa’s smiling coast and join the people using motorcycles to save lives

There are plenty of motorcycle tours that promise the adventure of a lifetime, big miles, epic roads, and life-changing experiences. After all, that’s what motorcycle travel is all about.

But few offer the chance to ride across tropical beaches and explore remote African villages, while also witnessing the genuine impact motorcycles can have on people’s lives, all in the same trip. That’s what makes Two Wheels for Life’s Ride The Gambia tour so different. It’s a trip that gives adventure a real sense of purpose.

Set on the sun-drenched coast of West Africa in The Gambia, which is known as the Smiling Coast, riders swap the unpredictable British weather for blue skies and sunshine, as they spend days exploring sandy tracks, winding through palm forests, stopping at bustling fishing communities, and riding along open beaches and dusty backroads.

One moment you’re weaving through vibrant local markets, stopping for a bite to eat and to chat with villagers, the next you’re riding alongside the Atlantic Ocean at sunset capturing shots to share with family and friends.

The riding itself looks like enormous fun too. Small groups are led by an off-road riding professional, exploring The Gambia aboard lightweight Yamaha AG bikes.

The bikes, which are also used by health professionals in The Gambia, were originally designed for agricultural use, which is what the AG stands for. But these simple, rugged machines also make ideal trail bikes and are perfectly suited to the terrain. The team at Two Wheels for Life say most riders end their trips asking if they can take their bike home.

The routes are designed to be adventurous without requiring Dakar-level skills, making the trip accessible to riders with a decent level of confidence and a taste for exploration.

Ride The Gambia offers the sort of raw, authentic travel experience many adventure riders spend years searching for. There are cattle wandering beaches, jungle-like coastal tracks, river crossings, chaotic towns buzzing with life, and sunsets that look almost too dramatic to be real. It’s the kind of place where every day produces a new story.

Beyond exploration

But while the riding is the main draw, what elevates this trip is the connection to the work of Two Wheels for Life.

For those unfamiliar with the charity, it provides reliable transport for healthcare workers across Africa, enabling them to reach remote communities that might otherwise struggle to access medical care. In these areas, motorcycles aren’t just convenient, they’re essential.

Instead of simply passing through as tourists, participants get the opportunity to follow a motorcycle riding healthcare worker as they visit remote communities to see how bikes are used to deliver vital support to isolated areas, as well as meeting local people and getting a real glimpse into life in The Gambia.

Riders also visit workshops and meet the team behind the project, with a chance to talk bikes to the people that keep them on the road. All this adds a deeper sense of purpose to the journey without overshadowing the adventure itself. And that may well be why the trip is so appealing.

If you sign up for the ride, you’ll be in good company. Previous visitors include The Girl on a Bike Vanessa Ruck, Yamaha Rally Team riders Pol Tarres and Alessandro Botturi, and former MotoGP riders such as Randy Mamola and Kevin Schwantz, all of whom have described unforgettable experiences.

But at its heart, Ride The Gambia still delivers exactly what most of us are searching for: discovery, unpredictability, camaraderie, and proper adventure, with a humanitarian element that gives the whole experience an added layer of meaning.

Real meaning with Two Wheels for Life

There’s also something refreshing about travelling with a group of like-minded riders who are there for more than just Instagram photos or bucket-list bragging rights. Previous tours have created the sort of friendships that only seem to happen when people share challenging, unforgettable experiences together, while making a valuable contribution to the charity’s mission.

In short, Ride The Gambia offers what, for me, are the most important parts of motorcycle travel, a genuine adventure with real human connection at its core. And honestly, scrolling through the photos alone was enough to make me start checking flight prices.

Despite a portion of each fee being donated to the charity, the organisers have managed to keep the full cost under £4,000. This includes flights, meals and accommodation at a beach hotel that has pools and tennis courts as well as the odd monkey.

The trip is run on a not-for-profit basis with all funds raised from the rides ploughed into the programmes, so participants know that just by joining the ride they are making a huge contribution.

So, if you fancy swapping your daily commute for beach rides, tropical trails, and one of the most eye-opening motorcycle adventures around, you can find out more about Two Wheels for Life’s Ride The Gambia tour HERE.
