Aprilia SR GT 200

Post by Magnusson »

This little thing was sitting on the showroom floor, marked down, looking sad. So I gave it a (place outside my) home.

Power. It has plenty, I'm still careful not to give full throttle and vary the revs. I'm also avoiding the highways so I need even less power.
Handling. It felt okay in the beginning, but completely rubbish when I got home first time, after 300 km in one go. In the end it felt like I was riding heavy duty earth compactor. I was seriously considering replacing the tires (with only 300 km of wear). But after couple of days of (my body) recovering it's great. Maybe don't go on long trips until I've gotten used to the thing.
Weight. Can hardly feel it. It almost jumps on to the centre stand by itself. Steering is completely effortless at low speed.
Seat. Seat is a bit hard. It will no doubt soften a bit with use. It's a bit cramped. If I could push my butt couple of centimetres further back it would be better. I'm 1,75, someone slightly shorter might fit better.
Storage. Groceries for whole week fit under the seat. (I'm still considering a top box).
Screen. The stock screen is mostly for decoration, I'm considering the full size Aprilia one, but it looks a bit small in the photos.
Stop N Go. The bike has stop and go, so the engine is not idling when stationary. The whole engine is designed with that in mind (like my old Honda SH 150). The starter is part of the engine, not bolted on. So when the engine starts you don't hear "clonk, wirr, wirr". The engine just turns and runs. So (unusually) this Stop N Go doesn't bother me, so I leave it engaged.

Some more things come to mind.
Key. It has a key, not keyless. Some people like it. I prefer keyless. But it's not like I cannot use a key.
Heated grips. They are available as option. But require some more stuff. Incidentally, yesterday I saw Oxford heated grips on sale online. There might be a pattern emerging here. :D
Hand guards. "In a scooter?" I hear you say. I know, nuts, right. But my hands get really cold when it's cold. So I have hand guards in the back of my mind. I might even brush the virtual dust off some OpenSCAD design I did some years ago. Give them a little bit of modification and anovernight print.
Dash. It shows lots of things. Speed. (Very handy.) Rev counter. ("In a scooter?" I hear you say. I know, nuts, right.) Fuel consumption. Distance until empty. Clock. Some smartphone things. (That require some extra hardware.) Coolant temperature. Low Tire Pressure Icon. (Not used but who knows, I might spot add-on TPMS on sale somewhere) Side stand warning light. Voltage meter.

Standard Netherlands price for this (the sport version, or the middle model) is 5079 Euros. Aprilia had generously dropped the price on most models by 1000 as an August deal.
The guy at the dealership said I could basically ride it for two years, then sell it for the same price as I bought it for (used vehicle prices in NL are just dumb). We'll see how that goes. My plan is to just enjoy riding.

Great Bike. I had the 180cc version years ago. It went very well, I loved it. The 2t version is a total hooligan.

A little report.
Great little scooter. So light. Handles like a champ in the snow. But not without some minor niggles.
Cold, busy-ness and lazy-ness have prevented me from doing any real updates to the chariot.
Except the screen. Which I replaced with XL Kappa screen. Somehow I overlooked the fact that mounting brackets were of course not included with the screen. So I 3D printed some to get going. Need to re-design and re-print them. The plan is to include some mounting system for phone or maybe Android Auto screen.
Rear suspension is basic. Soft damper and soft spring. Front suspension could probably use improvement too, but the rear is so poor that in comparison the front of the bike is like a limousine. Aprilia sells sport rear suspension, but don't tell anyone what the actual difference is. So YSS will most likely win that choice.
Tires suck. Lot of vibration, specially in the front. Maybe they're just unbalanced. The grip is not bad. The replica version comes with different tires, that have more street oriented pattern.
The seat base has crown right where I sit when sheltering behind the screen. The foam is thin there. Ouch. My guess is that this is an attempt to make space for helmet under the seat. Maybe it would work if my helmet was smaller. When I look at the space I feel like Dark Helmet from Spaceballs. Maybe there would be less ouch if my butt was smaller.
Somewhere along the way (when the weather turned colder) the check engine light came on. Scanning (by the dealer) revealed that secondary lambda sensor was taking too long to heat up. The secondary lambda sensor is part of the update to EU5+ emission standards. So in pure Italian style the ECU was updated to stop showing that pesky error.
Now it's showing service icon on the dash. Dealer should have cleared that when doing the service. Need to look into the manual to see if I can do this. This might even be an opportunity to use the OBD2 adapter I bought. Edit. Simple fix. Switch ignition on while holding the right button on the dash. Hold for five seconds.
Need to install at the heated grips I bought. I had heated gloves. Now I have a heated glove, and a matching one that is not heated.
Now that the first thousand km are only a distant memory I need to look at the variator. Put slightly lighter weights to increase acceleration.

To add.
Fuel consumption is quite reasonable. I sometimes see over 50 km/l displayed on the dash while tootling along with traffic at 50-60 km/h. I've also seen under 25 km/l while overtaking at 120 km/h (and under hard acceleration) . Which is top speed as far as I can tell. That was with a slight push from favorable winds. And stock variatior setup.
The engine is smooth for this displacement. Exhaust is weally, weally quiet. It's so quiet that there is noticeable gear/tire noise when decelerating, or going under a bridge, or through a tunnel.
Since two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time there is no space for handguards with this screen. Or no space for this screen with handguards. But the screen is already there. So I need to come up with a new plan for handguards.

That’s some impressive mpg. It would be interesting to see what it calculates at the pump… i used to find my last PCX would indicate over 180mpg but real world was more like 130.
Mines (PCX) the same with the handguards. Screen won!
What adventures do you have planned for the better weather? We may have to start off an ABR scooter rally 🤣

ABR scooter rally sounds awesome.
Back around Covid days I got the idea of a tour around the Mediterranean. Following mostly old Roman roads.
I found out few things.
The Mediterranean is (and the Roman empire was) enormous. It would take months. Many of the roads have disappeared. Some of the countries I'd have to go through don't really like tourists. You need Visas etc. Back into the bucket with that plan.
Then I thought about circling the Alps. With stops in some vineyards and staying at farms.
I found out few things.
The Alps are big. Planning 200-300 km per day means it takes weeks. Plus the time it takes to get there. Back into the bucket with that plan.
Then I thought about visiting the Pyrenees. I found out that they are far away. :D
Most of all I found that organizing trips is hard work.
The method of packing and leaving and finding places to camp each day might be the best option.
