To many to choose from

Post by Darren s »

Hi all been a member for a good while and got my first Adventure bike a few months back a 19 plate 1090 adventure great bike do it all tool. I’ve probably done 3000 miles on it and a 800 mile trip over to Holland with the TET thrown in for good measure. This got me thinking have I bought in to the idea that I need this big capacity heavy bike🤔 would something lighter like a 690-701 do the job just as well or even smaller. It’s motorway sections that are my concern on a smaller bike that being said perhaps I scrap motorways all together.

690/701 is horrible on busy A roads, let alone dual carriageways.
If you’re ok riding the 1090, I’d say keep that…..

…..but maybe buy a 690/701 as well for those little local trips.
You know it makes sense.

What do you think about a small twin? Like a CFmoto 450, a Tuareg 660 or an MT-X800?

Apart from road riding a Kawasaki Versys 650 for a day and then, for the rest of the week a Suzuki V Strom 650 (which I really liked), for me as an elderly limited ability off road rider, they didn’t seem up to much really rough stuff (happy to be corrected) and ran out of puff on pushing along road work. Both incredibly comfortable though and must be way lighter than the 1090.
I don’t know anything about the ones you list so can’t really comment.

I had two 690 and loved them, I reduced the rear sprocket on the second one by three teeth and it was way better on road and no different off, at my level.
65 to 70bhp is lovely but the vibes could get a bit much after an hour of road riding, even on dual sport tyres.

Most people on here will be far better qualified to help you though but I thought I’d butt in with my experience.

I would be reluctant to sell the 1090 though.

Big capacity heavy bikes are awesome on the highways. If most of your adventure is on the highways, keep it. If most of your adventures are on TET consider getting a little lighter bike.

Yes, sure a good statement.
We are spoiled to have so many bike to chose from.

But to sat what bake is better than the other and which is the best is impossible-
Almost all bikes are are very good for something.
But always a compromise.

And only you can say what is best for you.
Based on what you want to do, How you want to ride,
And what are the most important things for you.

If you like a bike and use it. Then it is good.

But I should definitely advice you to at least test a bike in the 400-500 cc segment.
And make your own opinion.

I am an old and stiff man.
I want to do the maintenance myself.
I want a luggage system that can handle my camping equipment
I want to travel on tarmac and dirt/gravel roads. But I do not what to do enduro type of racing on trails. Neither do I want to use highways.
I ride solo

=> So I end up with a choice that is good for me. At least today. Tomorrow, maybe I want to do something else with the bike. And buy another type.

I have a 690 and use it for everything. Excellent bike if you are aware of its compromises.
Goes fast enough to easily break the max speed limit in all european countries.
But different people have different opinions.

If you want to do maintenance yourself and want a twin for the highway, stay away from the modern FI bikes as their repair is computer ) CAN based.
The CFMoto 450 is a really good start!
