Triumph Or BMW ?

Post by PeteDuke »

I've finally decided to change my bike BUT can't decide which one.
could I have an honest opinions which way to go.
I am a little short in the leg (read short arse) 5'7". and replaced right knee.
BMW F750GS or Triumph 800 Tiger XC.
I just can't decide. Help much appreciated.

The Tiger is tall, i'm 5'10" and i've put a lower seat and lowering dogbones on mine and it's still a PITA. Also it's top heavy and so i just put in 10 litres of fuel for pottering around the back lanes once the petrol warning light comes on. I've put a 19" Roadie front wheel on it too just for extra tyre choice. Servicing is a total PITA too, i've stripped all the plastics off mine for ease of access. Also sellers are asking too much for them, just look on ebay and see how many are for sale, they'll never be sold with the prices they are asking.
I've not ridden the BM but it looks good, wasn't the Tiger copied from it, it certainly looks like it.

The Tiger 800 XR is probably closer to the F750GS. Both of these have cast wheels and a 19" front which gives you a lower seat height.
The BMW is (on paper) heavier with a 4 litre smaller tank.

I would really try and test ride or at least sit on both to get a feel of how that weight is carried, and also what the seats are like in regards to width. A slightly narrower or well tapered seat can make a big difference in how tall a bike feels regardless of the quoted seat height.

As for looks or whatever, Triumph were developing the Tiger 800 for 5 years so well before the mid GS broke cover. And we all know by now that Suzuki did the beak first with the DR Big ;)

...I was at a Suzuki dealership this week and the sales manager reckons there is a strong industry rumour of Suzuki bringing out a new 1000+cc adventure bike to replace the V-Strom 1000...which although has been recently updated with new bodywork and gizmos (as we all know) still has an engine that dates back to the late 1990's.

last week i went on a trf road ride to pembrokeshire .. 250 miles.
I struggled on the tight wet gravelly bendy lanes, with poor suspension, and road tyres.
more open but still tight back roads, i kept up well, those behind struggling to keep up with me, because of my instant low down torque, but me struggling to keep up with the big adventure bikes, because of their sheer power and class suspension.
Open roads .. only the speed limit kept me back .. smooth easy comfort. a pleasure.
last mile, after the finish, on way home, .. i had the pleasure of overtaking the big bikes on a smooth 50 bend I knew well lol. 8-)
o ... well over 80mpg :D

da big bikes..
