Hard to believe that we were picnicking in shirt sleeves up on the sierra with the husky on Friday. Now the autumn - which had record high temperatures and a drought - has closed like a slamming door, as often happens in the first week in November ...
So, this morning at 06.00 50 kgs of husky jumps on the bed, farts and starts eating my head - nothing for it but to go out for 'walkies' and hang on as he jumped for joy as we rounded the corner into the north face of the village - we're nice and snug facing south-east - and it was like walking into a 'fridge. An hour later and the sunrise showed us why, as if we couldn't guess; powdery snow on the mountains above 2,000 metres about twenty miles up the valley and a thick covering on the 3,000 metre+ peaks surrounding Andorra 50 miles to the north-east, where we were shopping only last Wednesday. (thumbs)
So, time to plan a nice snug Christmas, almost certainly snowed in for at least a few days and get onto thebookdepository.com who deliver for free albeit slowly by Royal Mail ...
But what to buy? This year's surprise best read was a birthday present from a friend for Mrs S back in July: The Cathedral of the Sea, by Ildefonso Falcones, a brilliant historical novel set in 14th Century Barcelona and apart from the bloodthirsty nastiness of the period, burnings, beheadings, etc. as well as some fiesty bodice ripping* - not to mention The Spanish Inquisition! - it's a must read book for anyone who know Barcelona well or is planning a visit there.
But I've now read that and I'm looking fro something to get stuck in to, preferably inspiring travel writing - not just biking - or a good biography, the 18th Century revolutionary period, i.e. American, French and Scientific, by preference, but I'm open t any good ideas - as I hope everyone else will be on this 'ere Forum seeing as we're such a sophisticated bunch of Ladies and Gents ...

Sophisticated I am not. The only thing I've read this year that comes close is Flashman but I'm guessing you've already read it. Is he 50kg now?
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

If I didn't already have one I'd be buying a Kindle and going for random orders knowing that I'll enjoy some of them.
I've got about 250 books on my Kindle and I can retrieve any of them on any device and that means I'm never short of something to read but just occasionally there'll be a book that isn't available and I can't do without so I have to splash out on just a single copy for usually more money.

I was thinking of starting Jack Reacher. How are they compared to the film?Redmurty wrote:you need some Jack Reacher in your life mate (thumbs) a very sophisticated read

do you want the books ? not a very challenging read at all but entertaining I like his thought process on how he investigates, several of my clients recommend I read the books as apparently there are similarities :whistle:Brenhden wrote:I was thinking of starting Jack Reacher.
