How square is too square?
How square is too square?
Noticed the Conti Trail Attack 2 on my rear has a bit of a flat spot round the middle. Handling's unaffected so far, and there's plenty of tread left right across, but i'm just wondering how people feel about squaring off and how far you let it go before swapping out the tyre. I've done just over a thousand miles on it, but i don't know how many the previous owner did. Can't be that many, the bike had only done 1500 when i bought it, and it's not the original Scorp trail like i still have on the front.

quite a bit of chicken strip showing there, if you can feel the bike drop into a corner then its prob time to change, unless you are running summat like a dunlop 207 rr which has a very steep profile for fast directional changes.
these look pretty new can you see the lettering in the rubber the flat you can see, i think you are quite a far way off changing.

I run Heidenau K-60s and wore the last one untill it was almost ( about 2mm of tread) bald in the centre. Plenty of tread on the sides and didn't really notice anything
handling wise. Still went round corners, but then I'm no Rossi...

I change a squared off tyre when I feel that I am tipping over an edge, or you can go and find lots of corners to play in and round it off a little again.
Change it if your not happy (thumbs)

Re: How square is too square?
Looks fine, I'd get 10,000 miles out of that tyre
My rear Conti TA2 is loads more squared off than that

It looks OK to me, some way to go before needing replaced.
You will feel the edge when it gets bad, however don't overlook the condition of the front, this usually starts to form a v as most of the wear occurs cornering. This exacerbates the tipping feeling, but can hide it if little worn. Always treat them as a pair.

Re: How square is too square?
Good advice, folks, thanks. Like i said the handling's still fine just now, i'll keep an eye on it and change it if it starts to feel a bit squirrelly. Good point about the front too. Just had a look and it seems fine.
Thanks
