S 10 honest opinion wanted

Post by SPEN »

After having had two GS's i'm thinking of going for a S 10 ,can any owners give me some honest feed back ? my old 1150 GS was a heavy bugger to move about in the garage and i think the Yam is as heavy ,I use the bike for just road use so not to worried about it's weight on lanes and trails etc just reliability and build quality service costs that sort of think.

Cheers

My 14 ES is easy enough to push around when at home..... I ride it into the back yard, then have to back it up and turn it 180 degrees to park it in the garage...... I'm 5'9 and under 12 stone so I'm not weight lifter material :)

General consensus on the Super Tenere forum (yamahasupertenere.com) is that it is severely underrated and forgotten by the bike press..... not a lot goes wrong with them.

There's a guy stateside that has done over 130,000 miles on his in 3 years with just Oil/filter changes and the usual tyres and pads ......

Plenty fast enough in the real world to get into trouble... more weather protection than a standard 1200 GS ( Pre WC) plenty of gizmo's on my ZE including electronic suspension, heated grips, and a full digital dash.

I've had 3 1200 Gs's, 2 1100's, 3 1150's , a Triumph Explorer and a few others in between... and the Super Tenere has been with me for almost a year now... and that is impressive the way I swap and change. Not intending to part with it yet B)

I have had mine for 3 years and use Alf England for servicing my last service was a Major service and it cost me 500 Quid but that was because I had a bad plug coil it was stuck in as well my next service will only be 120 it is Just coming up to 30000 and the header Pipe flanges are rusted to the point they will fail before the Headers do themselves so I am opting to fit new Headers and have the old studs taken out and new ones put in as well so this will add to the next service cost

Why am I doing this the sales man at Alf England Said when I enquired to change it for a new one(I went there wanting to buy a new one ) I could just sell you a new one but just have what is needed done and then bring it back in 30000 more miles if you still what a new one
Other than general running costs I am over the moon long service intervals there are faults with the bike like it is a little heavy moving it around but once underway it feels light
The spokes are poorly coated and will tarnish I will more than likely look at having standard rims put on at a later date
The coil packs seem to be common issue on them as well.
options for luggage are vast I have the Givi Outback luggage and am happy with that.
I use mine all year round so this is one of the reasons for My corrosion issues on the headers ACF 50 just burns off I always wash the salt off after a run

I think the S10 is rated a bit heavier than a 1150 GS on paper

Lovely bike though

I don't know much about the S10, but a group of us, mostly on various GS's rode to the Pyrenees from Northern Ireland last September. One of the group was on a blue S10.

I do have to say that I was impressed with it, and so was my mate Gavin, who was with us on his GS1150. So much so, the 1150 is gone and replaced with a Touratech loaded S10 World Crosser. :woohoo:
If I'm not online.............

I'm probably out on the Bat Bike

The S10 is an easy bike to ride as the weight is low...as for pushing it around its about the same as the GS1150...I currently have an S10 which I have had for the past 2.5 years and also had a GS1150 for 3 years.

I sold my World Crosser cause it was just to heavy for me to move about, brilliant bike though.
