He was there so that you ( the greater you, as in the public) don't have to...a tiniest bit of respect and acknowledgement that he chose the job, and not chose to die wouldn't be amiss

Very very odd thing to say, to serve and protect, thats a police officers role.

Going by your comments you wont be buying/wearing a poppy either, because those brave souls who lost there lives serving and protecting 'should have got out of the way also?

I think he has raised an interesting point.

I agree it is very sad that the police officer, or any other police officer for that matter, has been killed in the line of duty and they deserve more commendation for their actions.

I do understand where fullerton is coming from, it was the police officers choice of career and no one forced him to join or to put himself in harms way, but that does make it all the more valiant as he chose to do this and for that he deserves an applause. Same with military types... join the army on a miserable salary, get sent off to Iraq etc and get killed. Again, it was their choice and they knew what they were signing up for, not "national service". Again, I also do think it was very sad that so many lost their lives in the various world wars where they had no choice but to sign up etc. I applaud all of them too.

And for what it's worth, I am currently waiting a formal offer to join the MDP after been given an unofficial heads up. And yes, it was my choice, and yes I accept the consequences if anything were to happen.

I think I will have to join the 'un pc' brigade that cannot dare to even raise an eyebrow when the media makes a hero to sell print. Many, many brave service personnel have given the ultimate and yet most at best get two lines in the local rag.

I have to agree with you especially after the government of the day changed how they repatriated the bodies of servicemen who died overseas so they didn't come through Wootton Bassett.

I don't have any issues with the coverage that the funeral today got but I do think it wouldn't have got such high level coverage if he'd been 2 years off retirement and didn't have young children.

Anyway, RIP Dave Phillips. Nobody should die at work no matter what their job is.
