Heading to the Isle of man for a long weekend...suggestions

Post by Q plate »

Hi, heading over to the I.O.M early May for the first time & just looking at where to go/what to do. I'm going with the old boy who's 75 & on a 1200rt so green lanes won't be a priority ;) it's only a short amount of time I know but just wondered if anyone has any 'don't miss' suggestions. I'm guessing we'll be camping in douglas, our general interests are bikes, military history, beers (overlooking nice harbours?) etc

Regards AL (thumbs)

Motorcycle museum at Snaefell.

Lady Isabella at Laxey.

Take him on a steam train down to Port Erin if its sunny, walk on the beach front and coffee/beers at the station.

From Douglas you can get the train down to Port Erin and also get the tram to Laxey and from there Snaefell Mountain Railway tram to the summit. Its worth going for the ride as it follows some of the TT course.

Take the bikes to Peel for that ice cream and the wander too, we have fond memories of that.

Take a look here http://www.visitisleofman.com/placestov ... ection.xml

I think the Snaefell motorcycle museum is closed. There is a classic bike collection in Kirk Michael and a transport museum opening in Jurby.

Take a ride out to the sound opposite the Calf of Man, Langness and the Point of Ayre.

Stayed in Ramsey for the TT and loved it there. Great pubs right next to the harbour. Some good food places too.

Stop at some of the famous corners like Quarter Bridge, Ramsey Square and on the Mountain.

Niar Byl Is great for wildlife. Ice cream on the front at Peel and wander up to the castle. Port Erin is peaceful with a great beach.

Enjoy

The most important thing is to do at least one full lap. Even better is to get up stupidly early and be on the road as it first gets light and do the complete lap including the section at Governors that's closed off.

Once you've done that go into Douglas and get a map that shows the original TT course and go and do that lap as well then pop down to the south and do the lap they use for the Southern 100.

After that you can chill out and see what else the island has to offer and there's quite a bit but road racing is what it's really about so get those laps in (thumbs)

Thanks for the replies fellas, got plenty to go on there was only looking looking at some pics of the sound last night & the transport museum be right up his street. Lap of the circuits definately on the cards although probably aiming more towards an ice cream stop record more than speed ☺

The museum up on Snaefell closed years ago, unfortunately, it is now at Murrays Museum near the `Fairy Bridge` on the Douglas to Castletown road. In no particular order, I suggest...

The Manx Museum in Douglas.
The small Museum at the airport (between airport and Castletown).
Niarbyl.
The Sound, overlooking the Calf of Man.
Cregneash village.
Peel Castle.

I`m there this weekend ;)
