VERY VERY close call today

Post by dubber68 »

Well on the ride home tonight had a real heart stopping moment. Riding down a large well lit road with no traffic behind me (makes the chances of a SMIDSY higher with no cars following you in my opinion) with a car waiting at a side street. Did the usual and looked directly at the car until I was sure he had seen me (aware that I was the sole approaching vehicle)then returned my focus back to the road. A little voice in my head said something was not quite right and just as I looked back at the car to check I saw him pull out on me. Had to swerve around the front of his car as he did an emergency stop directly in front of me and my leg rubbed along his bumper for a split second.
As I was riding away I saw him slumped over the wheel. Just a few hundred feet down the road I had to stop at a red light and saw that he stayed stopped in the road for quite a while before driving away, he was very shook up in my opinion. What happened next really surprised me, I started to feel sorry for him. Weird because I would normally just want to express myself in a forthright and possibly physical manner.
I work to live. I live to ride. I ride to work, Ever felt like your going in circles.

Hopefully thats as close as he will ever come again (you too of course), maybe though, hopefully even, that incident will stick with him at junctions for a very long time.

Judging by his reaction I think he will remember that one for a while.

The human brain learns the shapes of things it needs to look out for (cars), anything else it can accidentally ignore. The guy probably looked right through you. However it might mean he doesn't make the same mistake again...

Glad you are alright. Happened to me once in central Bristol, I saw this woman look right at me and then she pulled out when I was about 20 feet away, the only thing that stopped the collision was I was going up a steep hill and my 125 was labouring. We both did a little wee!
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Glad to hear you managed to escape a crash. Well done.

Had a funny one on the road into Aylesbury years ago. I was driving along behind a police car. A woman in a car was waiting to pull out of a garage forecourt, the police car passed her and then she pulled out straight into the car I was driving.
The car was a write off. It's a funny old world innit?

Stay lucky. (thumbs)
