How many own just a bike and no car?

Hey all,

So I'm just curious really. With my desire to get back onto two wheels, the only way I can do this financially is to run just a bike and no car (gf has a car so will still have access to one, just not my own)

How many here just have a bike, and how do you fare in the worser weather for commuting etc?

I'm also assuming this has probably been asked hundreds of times but couldn't find anything with the search function so apologies if it has.

Not me I'm afraid, I drive 25000 miles a year, about half of that with a three year old girl.

Yup just 2 bikes, the Mrs has the car. When the weather is meh I layer up ala Michelin man. Current weekly commute is 450 miles, round n round the M25 hamster wheel

I've been carless for nearly three years. I bought a new Hyundai i10 in October 2009 during the government Scrappage Scheme and then a new Tiger 800XC in March 2011: after a couple of months I decided that I didn't need both so I sold the car and have been reliant on the bike since. I started seeing Alison during the summer of 2011 and she has a car which I use from time to time. I now live within 2 miles of my office so I don't have to commute on the XC and my annual milage has dropped from around 13,000 to 5,000 miles a year. Even so, my 3 and a half year old bike is about due for its 24,000 mile service!

Before I moved in with Alison, I was commuting 32 miles a day in all weathers. The bike has heated grips and two 12 volt sockets for my heated kidney belt and heated fleece. It wasn't too far so I didn't get too cold even without the heating.

I have had a bike as my only transport more often than not as I didn't pass my driving test until I was 23 and when I was at university from 1997 to 2000 I didn't really need the added expense of a car.

I haven't really had to worry about anyone besides myself for most of my life so I do what suits me.

Car (company one) and bikes - about 30k miles a year in the car (22k last year on business) and around 12k on the bikes, nearly two thirds of those on the NC700X. In my 'yoof I was bike only, didn't take my car test until I was 20 so bike was only means of transport

I couldn't do my job solely relying on a bike and quite honestly wouldn't want to try. I have three kids and wouldn't put them through the discomfort and hassle of being transported everywhere by bike just cos' it's my passion.

Do have a very good friend who has put 90k on his BMW RT over the last 5 years as he only means of transport. His wife does have a car though and he has said if they had to only have one form it would have to be the car as they have a young daughter and just not practical to cover all trips with just a bike, even one with all that luggage

I have 2 bikes and a car.

21000 miles on the bikes last year and 2000 miles in the car. I only drive the car when i have my son of dogs.

I ride in all weathers to work on a 70 mile 2 hour round trip. My secreat is heated gear...makes riding in freezing driving rain possible without really bulking up...oh and you will need the best waterproof gear you can afford.

Yeah I have no kids to worry about. My car/bike isn't part of my work (I'm plod so they give me cars to drive around in when I'm not on foot)

I'll have around a 30min commute to my station after I move house on thursday as opposed to my current 5 min one.

So sounding like people who do go car less manage alright, bad weather itself doesn't overly bother me as I'm out in all weathers for work anyway.

Now have a bus pass to cover when bike not useable.
