The nut came off no worries, and the bolt turns pretty much 360 with a socket spanner on it; the bolt still hasn't drifted after shredding the thread and whacking the bolt end for ten minutes, first with a drift and then brute force and ignorance against the bolt end in itself...

It's the bolt on the suspension linkage that drops away and lets me access the actual bolt that holds the bum end of the shock, any tips on drifting the bolt thru appreciated

I've drilled a one out before on a Yam, but this Honda has needle bearings in it and if it needs drilling well, so be it but if there's a less destructive way then I'd like a couple of pointers...

Can't help with your current problem, but if you ever have to hit the threaded end of a bolt again put the nut back on first. Screw it on just far enough so that it is flush with the end of the bolt - the nut will protect the threads.

Thanks sledgegreen mate, did think about leaving the nut on but there was only a couple of mil of thread left showing and I was worried about busting a 60 p nut if I whacked it, now I guess I need a new bolt (7 squids from Lings Honda for the right one!) but the nut's still good

Wemoto do a bearing kit for the linkage for about 55 squids so now that I've started, I'll finish

It's just a bit of a grind that the receipts I got with the bike show a 400 quid rebuild of the hoof 7 years, and co-incidentally 7k miles ago, and now it's in the same state again. I suppose several years of road salt and shed storage have that effect but I'm just replacing the worn monoshock with a bit better Ebay one for now and hopefully a Nitron monoshock later in the year, I guess I was hoping for an easy solution but every time the hammer gets used in anger I learn something new

Try putting a socket on an impact wrench or cordless drill and turning the bolt at speed for a while, that might loosen up any crap that's holding on to it.

It's definitely not threaded in somewhere else and the nut is just a double locknut?

The rear wheel needs to be off the ground with enough room to get a tyre lever, or similar, beneath the tyre. With gentle up / down movements you would be able to see / feel any free play in the linkage. You are looking for the centre point of this free play where there will be no side loading on the bolt. Then the bolt should be able to be 'tapped' out - well , at least before before you beat the life out of it.
