Chain de-greaser, more harm than good?
We all know of the importance of removing the "grinding paste" from the chain, but do the degreasers help or harm?

Everything in moderation. I have goosed a chain previously from over zealous application of degreaser. Looked really clean but one or two links dried up where the degreaser had removed the inherent lube.

If the de-greaser could get past the o-rings your chain was knackered anyway. If the de-greaser could get in so could water and muck to wash out the lube.
I just use paraffin and a toothbrush to clean my chain, about £5 for 4 litres that will last for years and I get over 20k miles out of my chains on a Triumph Sprint ST.

I disagree, the chain I knackered was not old at all. There has to be a potential space between prongs and links or they wouldn't move so still potential for degreaser to work through.
Bit of a non problem for me now thanks to a nice heavy prop shaft.

I don't use degreaser on my chain. I just turn up the scottoiler a bit and clean once a week with a rag and apply 75/90 gear oil. The oil "flushes" the chain and it looks as new now as it did 9,000mls ago when I fitted it.

I used to use paraffin on my sportsbikes. Got a scottoiler now too.

+1 scottoiler, i'll never not have one on a chained bike anymore. (or another brand of good automatic oiler like a tutoro maybe, but i trust scottoiler and the company are top people, so they'll get my support)

Never degrease my chains. Apply some lube and wipe with rag, then a bit more lube and ride. I won't risk washing the lube out of the rollers by degreasing.
