Steel Tubes for Pannier Rack

Post by Kinioo »

Hi there,

As I have brand new pannier rack for Kawasaki I want to adopt it to fit my Xt660Z to use with the soft panniers.

I want to use main 'oval' bit of the original rack and make/bend/weld the support 'legs' for it for mounting points on Tenere.

Question is where is the best source to get such a tube (original rack is 16mm outside dia)?

- buy a brand new?
- scrap yards?
- buy another rack and chop them off and weld them onto my rack?

Also any ideas on the mounting ends with the 'eye' for the bolts?? How to make them or again adopt from something else???

look up 'steel stockholder' on yell.com

or get it delivered to your door:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Round-Steel-T ... e240a#shId

you can get 1mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2mm, 3mm wall thickness, so depends on how light you want it

i'd just weld thick washers to your frame to bolt thru to the bike (presume thats what you meant)

Go to your local Industrial Estate, find a small engineering workshop and ask for their advice. I did this 3 mths ago in relation to something I wanted making for my 44ton Tractor unit. Volvo wanted almost £1000 for their pattern part, this guy adapted one from another truck for £30.

Yes, this is what I meant - didnt know how to describe it. I was thinking of welding the washers but will look for something like flat end of the tube with hole in it...that would be ideal i think?

It does help!!!

But I am here SG1 - Herts

What I need to do is the mounting bit which goes over the exhaust, then the longer one which goes to foot pegs but I want to mount it to the frame as I dont use original passenger foot pegs; and also some bar between both sides which goes behind number plate - I think this one can be smaller in diameter??

This rack in the picture is for info doesnt have to be based on this particular one.
