Sorn ,why am i missing 3 months?

Post by Blacknbluex2 »

Hi, any guys with sorn knowledge/ experience....

Brief details,

bought 1981 kwacka 650 on dec 20th 2012, (dated on v5) i bought it from a 3rd party on behalf of the deceased former owner,

waited for either sorn requirement or tax renewal reminder to come,

time passes,

saturday , got failure to tax letter dated 24 -4-13 saying vehicle did not have a valid tax disc or declared sorn FROM 28/02/2013....

my liability started from dec 20 2012 so whats happened to dec, jan and feb?

Thanks in advance

Presumably last keeper had it on sorn and that expired on the date they made the change of ownership to you..when a vehicle is sold the sorn ends and the new keeper has to apply for SORN..because you didnt they will hold you liable for the periiod when the vehicle was not taxed and not sorned..

If I recall correctly, when you take over ownership you are supposed to re-SORN the vehicle as the SORN is not transferable.
Easy to do an SORN on-line but as you do not have a RFL notice you will need your registration document. You can request an email confirmation.

At a guess the 3rd party who sold you the bike forgot to send off the paperwork.

When they finally remembered they just used the current date of the day when they sent in the paperwork instead of back-dating.

Hi
The bike should have been sorn'd by you as soon as you bought it. Cant do it online until the v5 is in your name. Need a form from the post office and send it off with the v5. Funny i bought a z650 last year still a pile of parts unfortunately :(

One other point. Vehicles last taxed before 30 Jan 1998 do not need to be SORN'd even if there is a change of ownership.

Best guess is that the last keeper didnt send the notification until 3 months later ( probably when THEY received a fine notice for the period...........
