Slightly off topic... they are working on the M60 turning it into a smart motorway... there are currently speed restrictions in place "average speed checks" at 50mph. Does anyone know how these are calculated? Does it calculate your average speed along the whole stretch of roadworks, or from where you join to where you leave, or between each camera?

I figure that if you are stuck somewhere not moving for a while that you should be able to counteract this later on by racing away - as long as your average doesn't go above 50mph you should be ok.

To some extent it doesn't matter to me as I'm riding and the cameras face the front not rear of the vehicle (thumbs)

I'd be interested to know how many tickets have been issued.

So long as you are talking about SPECS, picture below, then yes it's average speed between two cameras. So yes, if you've been stationary between two sets of cameras your average will be way below 50 so don't worry about it. If there are more than two sets though, and there usually is, you don't know which two are working in tandem to measure your speed.

Also, they work by reading APNR number plates on both cameras. Only if it calculates (speed = distance/time) a registration number has been speeding does it then take a photograph of the rest of car using the second camera and store it for a conviction. So if the camera can't read your number plate in the first place, there's no record of the fact you were ever there. A motorbike going through a front facing SPECS, is no different to a pidgeon flying past it.

Apparently the drivers car did this frequently , so he knew he had to stop to top up the oil again...

As with a lot of accidents a combination of a few small issues .

There are 4No pairs of active SPECS on each carriageway through the M60 works. They are not linked. All the others are "dummies". If I tell you they have to work at night, you can work out which are active.

The speed that triggers a NIP has recently been dropped. So beware.

Full coverage CCTV (recorded and stored) also picks up dangerous driving.

But please be sensible riding/driving through the works - the speed limit is to protect the workforce not ease traffic flow.

That just makes it worse...the hard shoulder is for emergencies, not routine vehicle maintenance or topping up.

Yes like the Norwich bypass, 30 limit on a 60 road makes sense during the week, at weekends when they are not working? easier to leave the signs in place :whistle:

Has anyone ever seen a rolling road block in action? It's scary stuff. A few years ago I was on the M40 near Birmingham and the Police were doing one. Three traffic cars backed up the three lanes of motorway traffic at about 40mph, I was in the left-hand lane. Then a car came up the hard shoulder at well over a ton, closely followed by another traffic car. It scared the shite out of me :blink: .
