Riding offroad alone...
Re: Riding offroad alone...
OK - so next months ride, I just reviewed my schedule. I'm feeling pretty confident that I can do November 27th. A couple hours in the mud in the morning followed by a pub lunch. Who wants to come along?
Re: Riding offroad alone...
Love to say yes Mav but several 100 miles to reach you, sorry mate, too cold up here when the snow comes to get through the Drumochter pass south!

Re: Riding offroad alone...
Mav, I'll consult with SWMBO (I learnt that off this site) tomorrow. I've a feeling we're down in Cornwall that weekend. If not, I'll be there, on a DRZ or a Tiger 955i with knobblies.
Solo or with company; both fine with me. Though I'd agree I probably take more risks when there's someone else on hand to help pick up the bike and stitch a leg back on.

BTW - has your SWMBO christened her bike in the mud yet?

Re: Riding offroad alone...
I usualy keep a phone in the top pocket of my jacket so i can get to it easily if i have an off, the only problem i had was riding with a mate on the Ox Drove near Salisbury where i busted my right wrist that was a sore ride home:( not had a problem on my own, could be a pace thing.

Re: Riding offroad alone...
 I was only joking (well sort of) to see who bit  , ya buggers, no one did
, some other sites are so anti 'on your own biking' this site is refreshingly different, well it is an adventure site, it's just that in a group your very rarely the same ability, age, on similar bikes, you all tend to ride to some-one else's pace, I'm an oldie and know I shouldn't get tempted, but I still do, and my body can't do it any more! My cracked ribs still hurt from an off in May riding in Wales with the XTZ club, my ability only just good enough, but fitness, well lack of it, caused me to just flop off my TT600 through exhaustion, we did do 168km's that day, mostly off road, in the mud n rut's (I hate rut's!) that's further than I've been off road in a day before, let alone at 52yrs n 20 stone
hmy: with knackered knee's! It's logistic's as well, tried to get mates interested in green laneing, even lent them bikes, but non continued too ride, so in the end you go on your own, and now I mainly just potter up the local lanes, so it's not to bad, James/Ipswichbiker it was a pleasure to meet and ride with you young man, your enthusiasm was infectious, and we didn't do/attempt anything we were at all concerned about (just your puka boots (Mercedes wind tunnel tested) that worried me a little
). Keep on riding chap's, n be safe, regards Dusan
Some times I even go to the shops all on me own, that's if I can slip past the wardens in the institute that looks after meeeeeeeeee :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Well, I like riding alone. No pressure regarding routes or timings. You can visit the same palce 20 times if you want, and noone will get bored.
However, you have to be realistic about safety. I would say that there aren't many roads in the Uk that aren't driven every day, but once you get off the beaten track in less populated areas or offroad then your risk multiplies.
I was lucky that when I came off my bike on Wednesday I was in a remote area but it was a touristy remote area and i knew someone would be along in a while (less than 2 minutes in fact vs 40 for the ambulance
)
Right now I don't know if I want to / can justify getting back on a bike again. Much as i still have this desire to travelmand be independant feeling the wind rushing past, it may be a landrover now instead. Justnnot the same though.
Bastards in a&e cut all my gear off too.

Don't worry, everyone feels the same after a big off and a spell in hospital. I know I did, but biking is in your blood. So as soon as the pain fades so will the desire to stop biking.PapaLazarou wrote:Right now I don't know if I want to / can justify getting back on a bike again. Re: Riding offroad alone...
Done many trails on my own , but started to think i might be a bit craazy when two Italians stopped me from attempting the Assieta alone this year.
I listened to them and headed for tarmac, they said heavy rain was due and having road tytres on it would be suicidal as it was slippy already... 5 years ago I would have smiled waited for them to depart and headed off anyhow, but getting older sometimes makes you think twice.
Went the tarmac route and rode into rain, with cloud so heavy and black you couldn't even see the ridge line. Even with someone else wouldn't have wanted to be up there.
Sometimes it pays to listen to others... but when the inner voice starts... make sure someone knows where you are headed.

Re: Riding offroad alone...
i think its ok
but i would suggest telling somone what route im riding off road [ and stick to it ] and what time i would be back ..or when i would ring to check in
some trails late afternoon at this time of year there will ne nobody ..nobody ..at all to help so i would say its not a bad idea ..if you get trapped between a dry stone wall and a gs 1200 you aint going to move it so at least telling someone the route seems good
trf suggests one to get help one to keep airways open ..so three ...worst case of course .but
i aggree with the guys sensible approach to trails you know is ok but please tell somone the route .the health and safty brigade would have us doing sod all
the other thing i strongly recomend
is take with you a proper first aid kit on or off road
i wont go into it but i never ride without one ever ...
:woohoo:
you may think the below photo is overkill
but it serves its purpose ..i never forget it ,,,its as vital to me as having oil in the engine before moving off :woohoo:
..baldy old doomonger that i am :silly:

60 quid one day with your local ambulance service may be the best money you have ever spent ,,

i dont want to piss on anyone parade or be a spoilsport
all id like you to do is think about it ..thanks
i will promise not to be serious any more
say you gashed your leg so bad on the trail you couldnt stop the flow and ride or walk at the same time its gonna take 45 mins or more riding and more than two hours walking to get off it and the bloods pissing down you leg
your already tired and bit dehydrated and loosing blood steadily its getting dark the temperature drops 6 degrees
of course thres no signal on the phone
,,riding the bike on the trail pumps it harder
..blah blah shock sets in ...problem somwhat
cheerful bastard arnt i
