Sorry Gary each to their own experiences and all but never encountered people like that. The most I get is your cheating but they only say that as they’re jealous of me smashing them up a hill

For instance I cycled 34 km tonight across single track trails forestry roads and offas dyke path and not once encountered anyone not pleased to see me even on offas dyke!

I love my ebike but not ready to part with the motor yet. I’ll wait until they have banned all greenlaning then I’ll buy a really posh one like in the photo above... it’s far to clean by the way!!

Paul .. I think the abuse is when I stray onto THEIR territory.. tarmac .. drivers really don't like it. to share their road with other legal vehicles.. I became suddenly aware of stereotyping . and group discrimination.

Garyboy, reminds me of when I was a full time cyclist. I bought a hardtail & for me an insanely expensive Specialised. 10 mile journey wasn't a big deal but I nearly died doing it, I thought my heart would explode. 4 miles in I worked out the rear brake was locked

The saddle, Dave, is EXTREMELY small and narrow .. but I shall suffer a little longer .. for the sake of ART .. it looks so PERTY

1. OK, so what's the real-world range like?
`eco mode` its around 100 miles if you peddle-only a lot and switch the battery off .. I think they quote around 70 or 80 miles.
`emtb` it must be around 50 or 60 miles .. but less for full-on `boost`.


2. Can you leave all the work to the bike or do you HAVE to pedal a bit?
the one wot I got is peddle-assist .. so you MUST peddle for the battery to come into operation.
I am sure I saw a model that was battery-only in one mode?
my modes are `eco`, `tour`, `emtb`, `boost`.
my bike is incredibly easy to push while walking.
my bike is still very hard to ride uphill .. I had to check if the battery was still connected … but works great on the flat (where u not need it so much)
the battery cuts out at 15mph. .. but by then you are flying anyway

3. What difference does that make to the range (i.e. no work vs pedalling)?
you can switch the battery off, so unlimited range .. but it is then harder to peddle than a mtb.
the range will vary with the chosen mode .. less `assist` means greater range.
Boost will give a shorter range

4. How does the suspension cope compared with an enduro bike on the same terrain at the same speed?
not tried it in earnest on a real trail .. but do not fancy my chances .. it is going to be hard peddling work … much more than I expected .. and I dont think it will cope with the rough anywhere near as well as a trail bike …. so I am thinking of getting a very small weak trailey .. to match me I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised though

5. Sorry, lots of Qs, but I can see myself on one of these one day and have never tried one yet.
you can get a test ride with a demo oldie model at you friendly motorcycle shop .. in UK anyway

Thanks for taking all that time to reply, Gary. Very helpful. Do you think your e-bike is typical, or are there models that assist better in the rough stuff? With my screwed up back the way it is, perhaps I'll just end up buying a fully electric enduro bike as soon as the range improves a little.

As to the vitriol between trail users/bikers/e-bikers etc - frankly I find it extraordinary. What is happening to people that they seek out new ways of hating one another like this? And for such ridiculously petty reasons. I don't mean to harp on about how brilliant France is (it has plenty of faults) but I can honestly say I have never witnessed anybody arguing about anything remotely like this. Amazing.

ebikes are pedal assist, the least amount of assist you use the further they will go. Look at the engine and see how much drag there is when you are over the magic 25kpm limit.

The range on my Giant should be anywhere between 20 and 80 miles dependant on hills boost used and weight I carry, same factors that affect mpg on a petrol bike. Cold and heat could/will affect the range of the battery as well.

It's the instant whack of the motor that makes you smile, the moment the pedal moves it's all go

Suspension wise I can't fault mine and it handles everything as well as my Wilbers on my Dr

should be in Wales over the weekend on mine

Stay safe out there tho pal, the roads are becoming a very dangerous place, doesn’t matter what form of transport you are using. I find now,especially in South Wales, there is an unnecessary amount of aggression and a complete lack of mutual respect amongst road users. I spent 12 years riding motorcycles and vans in and around London and never experienced the level of selfishness that I witness on our highways now. Everyone seems to be fighting for their self-importance on the tarmac.

as usual there are many factors contributing to the apparent and real rises in british aggression ..
Austerity.. people are really struggling and working harder then ever, ..
Brexit .. whichever side u on people are very unhappy with it all. ..
Bigger faster cars and vans .. the road system is shrinking comparative to the amount of traffic .. like fish in a shrinking pond in the summer .. lack of investment in infrastructure, poholes .. few cycle paths and walkers side walks
A growing intolerance .. and extremism .. globalisation, polarisation
etc etcetc


as to the ebike .. I guess that the more expensive bikes are better?
mine was £2,500 .. but they can go double that and more .. but I suspect it is through better suspension rather than better motors and batteries/ .. I stand and hope to be corrected?

as to La France … I just love it there .. I suppose if I had more gumption (as mam used to say)I would have moved there, but then I would not have looked after her for her last ten years.
France is fantastic and has great variety. .. Paris, the north and Brittany, the South and of courses the amazing central massive .... i loved all my visits there, many years ago .. and perhaps will do another next year?

im a total cheat ...im not a cyclist ...normally i think they should all be shot on sight ..the lycra brigade in groups are selfish arrogant pricks that like to play chicken with the traffic behind ..they know full well what their doing and the trouble they are causing but rely on all other road users to keep their sorry asses safe .so what opinions they hold about e bikes is irrelevent ...

.lets be honest they boil most motorists piss and secretly most would like to see them rounded up and gassed

soo on the subject of range .. worst ive done is 17 miles on turbo ...horrible snotty deep deep mud and waterlogged tracks ..that sound bad but it must have been around three hours and a proper workout to boot ...a similar performance is found when i ride the dune tracks on the coastal route ..just like a dirt bike the power sap is brutal

best ive done off road is 42 miles easy hardpacked dry tracks using varius modes of assist and a bit of up and down

id say a solid average would be the low 30s

im now carrying a spare battery sometimes so with a bit of planning ..theres no day i want to undertake that cant be covered by the two paowerpacks


heres the thing i cant answer ..how far will it go on a road ....ive no idea i think the furthest ive been on a tarmack road is around 7 miles and that was foreced on me by bad planning of the single battery pack
