Last year a cement mixer lorry flung a lump of hard concrete out of the back which went straight into the fibre glass bumper of my old Merc and took a lump out of it that was the size of an egg. Good job I wasn't on the bike  . I didn't get time to take his reg no. :( .

My wife had a very narrow escape this week on the M40 when a massive sheet of ice flew off the top of a truck and took off flipping through the air. My wife hit the brakes hard and it crashed down in front of her. She reckons it would have totalled the car. So my question, is this not something that should be checked before joining motorway when leaving services, presumably after overnight stop ?

Yes, it's an insecure load.

I had a similar issue many years ago with an army lorry coming towards me...the flappy canvas tilt was covered in frozen snow, which flew off and hit the road right in front of me.

Same with a car or van..you must knock all the snow off the roof, clear all windows etc.

There's a couple of tractor units speeding through Barrowford regularly, they seem to be using them as commercial vehicles. Nothing to do with agricultural work.
That's the sort of thing I am referring to! And 18yo lads gobbing away on the phone with a fully laden tractor and trailer outfit weighing 32 odd tonnes. Hopefully all fitted with working air brakes etc :?

To add to the near misses...
We were in the car in Mulhouse many years ago on our way to the fabulous Schlumph Bugatti museum and stopped at some traffic lights behind a large high sided truck. For some gut reason I left a gap, which was just as well, as the tailgate flapped open and about 5 tonnes of topsoil slid out the back onto the road, not the car bonnet.

Added to that, today I had my first proper near miss on the bike for maybe 20 years. Silly cow pulls out of her drive in our village in a 40 limit without looking, luckily nothing coming the other way so I could go round her as there was no way I could have stopped, even at 35mph. Enduro bike brakes aren’t that good. Apart from furious gesticulation, I was too angry to stop her and explain my feelings towards her. Probably would have got done for road rage anyway.
2022 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro sadly gone due to ill health.
Now on a 2025 Triumph Scrambler 400X but may be fitter next year.

Maybe write out a note politely explaining how close she was to taking you off, and pin it to her windscreen.

Accompanied by a steaming turd...

Just prompted me to remember my interesting lorry tale. … At night I gave way to an artic with a container at a roundabout and as it went past the front of the 4x4 a chain came out of the back causing sparks all over but it was still attached to the bed of the lorry. I followed said lorry through a residential type area with this bloody chain swiping from side to side up pavements and into hedges!! I kept flashing and trying to get round him but did not fancy decapitation. Eventually a couple of miles on he stopped at lights so I went up the wrong side of the traffic island to much grief from oncomers and blocked him. Fekin moron just grunted in Neanderthal and went and sorted it.
