I received an email from DVLA the same day he changed it, no signature needed these days, that being the day the money was transferred so presumably that day liability changed as well?

The V5 used it refer to 'registered keeper' which can be different to legal owner.

When you do the buy/sale V5 transfer online when you press the final button the vehicle has changed owners and the emails come through almost instantly to seller and buyer, the new V5 is printed at the same time hence early receipt of V5 for buyer.
A plus with online taxing is that it is instant so if you fancy a few days out on the untaxed bike in the shed pay out your 12 months ride the bike to last day of the month then SORN it and get 11 months tax back, you have actually only given the taxman £8 or less, if you did over a 100 miles on it you spent more on fuel than tax!
Does not seem quite as bad as £85 a year until you think about the £0 tax my wife's Fiesta costs!

Do you have to reply to that email to accept/sign or otherwise admit liability as a new keeper?
I also guess the vehicle is no longer taxed once the transfer is done online so you have to then tax it to drive it home/park on a public road or sorn it.
I'm sure there will be a scam based around this but then there are scams with the current/old way.

Much as i like the conveniance of the new systems What I don't like is how they get double tax for a month when a transfer goes through.
Generally the previous keeper has paid that months tax until the end of the month,but the new keeper has to back date their tax payment to the start of the same month and the government get paid twice for the one month cover.

You don't have to do anything the email is just to inform you of the change, if you weren't expecting it then you would have to contact DVLA I suppose. Of course the seller has to have all your details inc email address.

It is what it is and there are more important things to worry about in life. DVLA will benefit by £7 at best from the sale of a bike.
The seller doesn't have to mess about with posting off the old tax disc, the buyer doesn't have to mess about going to a Post Office having collected all the relevant bits of paper together (having probably trailered the bike home) and most importantly it is fully legal to ride the bike home.
Last year we went 100 miles on my GS to view a bike for my Wife. The bike was spot on and a bargain so we paid online, insured it online, taxed it online and she rode it home. My Wife was fully involved in the buying decision, was fully legal and she rode home on her own bike. For the ease and convenience, I (an old skool tight b'strd) was more than happy for DVLA to make £7 ...... we spent more than that on tea and cake during the day.

If the extra profit they make quickens things up then l suppose it's not to bad?
I've a new car on the way same spec & model as the one that's going the tax on the current one is £0 pa the new one is £120 pa as they've obviously realised there's to many freebies been given out?

The system in Spain is quite different, whoever owns the vehicle on the 1st January pays the annual tax for the vehicle. It's a simple system which keeps the tax low (€12 for a 200cc, €44 for a 1000cc) and stops people wearing out their finger tips and wasting moments of their life over £7
