I go back to the post about he timing belt in the car.

That particular dealer I hade been dealing with since 1977 so 2001 was 24 years later and many cars bought in between.

This might sound strange but working in construction where you are generally fighting for everything and generally going legal it was very refreshing to have what was a completely painless experience. On the subject of betterment my car came back with new fluids, filters, radiator repair, regassed aircon and lots of other side benefits. All in I was happy that they had done the job right and I didn't want or look for any more than that. Subsequently I was told the manufacturer had covered it all due to it being a parts defect, specifically a tensioner installed as part of the timing belt change.

I was very happy with the outcome. Since they had collected the car when it happened the only cost to me was getting out to pick it up....a walk. Even better is they can match the car and exhaust outlets in price for tyres and parts so still happy to use them.

Going legal you can win things but it takes sweat too no matter what and it's always better to have clear head and move on.

With the other car I got nowhere until I told Mercedes it was going into court along with all the trolley load of disputed parts and tyres [which I had kept] as evidence of their 'customer service' and 'expertise' to be landed in front of a courtroom full of lawyers they were trying to sell their cars to. Problems had started at 2,000 miles!. They settled pretty quick after that for a lot more than it would have cost them had they honoured their warranty in the first place. But I would have preferred the no hassle approach.

On the KTM......think I would have gone same route as the OP too. I suspect he will have a nice sweet bike at the end of it all and a not unpleasant experience with it. To me it's someone honouring the warranty in as fair a manner as they can.

Time for an update ! I'm honestly not making this up.
So after I seen the bike last week I was happy it would all be sorted rather quickly and be ready for the start off this week.
I called the dealer at the start of the week and was told the engine had been rebuilt and running and it all sounded good. BUT. They had left the seat at the first dealers and it was in the post so they hadn't test rode it yet but the seat was due in that day.
I called the next day to see if it was ready and was told the tech working on the bike had put his back out and was at the physio and they were not sure if he would be in later that day or not, so bike not ready yet but just needs a test ride basically.
Well I've been off work today and decided to have a ride over to the dealers, some 90 miles away to see if its ready, if not , I'll test ride it myself.
Pitch up at dealers , the techs been in work the seat is on and the bike is ready. Happy days! Well it was for about the first 100 yards.
Bike started great, sounded sweet so I set off.
First thing I notice is the gearbox didn't feel as sweet, bit clunky into first.
Got out of car park onto main road and about 100 meters in total, and its obvious this thing is seriously lacking power, it seemed ok for the first few yards or I didn't notice it as I was going so slow, but as I tried to pull away off the round about , it felt like the engine was seizing or something was. I pulled over with bike out of gear and engine was running great, maybe it was a clutch issue, so straight back to dealers.
Clutch lever was acting strange and it was decided to bleed the hydraulic clutch, this took a while and apparently air was present in the system, time for another test run.
Off I went, only made it 50 yards and turned back, clutch lever still crap, bike was jumping out of gear and fan was on in no time at all. back to dealer.
Clutch master cylinder changed for a new one, that was actually in stock! I was amazed.
I let the tech take it out this time, he came straight back with it diagnosing a knackered clutch.
Whole new clutch on order. I wont be getting it back this week thats for sure.
Give the dealer his due, he did ask me if I wanted my money back at this point, I didn't even bring the subject up. I told him not yet, stick a new clutch in it and see how you go.
Slowly getting a new engine at this rate.
On the plus side he did give me a spanking new KTM Adventure 1090 to play on until the 690 is fixed. I took the very long way home via the cat and fiddle and some other great roads and I might not want the 690 back in a hurry seeing how nice this 1090 is to ride.

So, The new clutch was fitted and the bike returned to me in work yesterday.

I took the bike out straigt away before the delivery guy left and it was working fine, this was a journey of about a mile.

Come rush hour and I'm heading home on the bike, I did around 9 miles of slow rush hour M60 riding, never got above 60mph or about 5k revs. Left at my junction and was waiting at the lights, went to pull away and the engine feels like its seizing. Temperature goes through the roof and I had a sense of humour failure.

Here's some pictures of the engine as it is now, I ended up pushing the thing home the rest of the way as it felt like it was going to lock up.

So now its either new complete engine or money back.

Yep, I think it might be the end of the road for me with this bike.
I spoke with the dealer today, he was a bit lost for words as nobody expected this to happen lol
He's asking KTM for a new engine on Monday, If he doesn't get it ,the bike will be his again.
I'm currently looking for something to replace it with.

Hi Decco, sounds simular to my 690 problems a little, I bought a 2013 690, it was second hand but only covered 400 miles at 4 month old, so was like new, on my second ride out it lost all power & sounded flat, it didn't seem mechanical so made my way to civilisation (was on trails at time) parked up & noticed no oil was showing, topped oil up & fired it up, still no power, so made my way home, getting slower & slower, no smoke just as though I was pulling a train!
Anyway it ended up at the dealers, 2 months later I got it back, not the dealers fault really, ktm kept slowing the job down , not letting the mechanic dismantle the engine completely.
Thay eventually did and the mechanic found the fault.
Which was a butterfly valve which opens & closes to let oil lubricate the piston, this valve had been wedged open with swarf, so oil was slowing the piston down, obviously the reason the oil was low in the sight glass, it was all in the cylinder.after another 3000 miles & various other breakdowns I sold it.
