I got to the end of the road before it stalled, got it started without having to turn the ignition off, rode a bit further and it stalled again. Then the problem seemed to clear. Did a few laps of the estate, braking hard and riding at low revs with no issues. Took it for a 50 mile blast and didn't stall once. The bike also seemed to accelerate better and I could accelerate up to 70mph smoothly, whereas before I would hit a flat spot about 60 and gradually build to 70. Will hopefully go trail riding this Wednesday and see whether it is totally cured.

Tyrant, heat and an impact driver with a larger bit usually works for me on ceased bolts.
any news on how the bike is running since the TPS adjustment

Hi all. Went out last Wednesday for a ride to see whether adjusting the tps cured my bike. Did about 150 miles with approx 50 of that off tarmac. The bike cut out once for no apparent reason, other than that it ran great. I've not really been keeping track of my mpg but I filled up at 210 miles with just under 16l. I'm having an extension done on my house at the moment so can't get the bike out for a bit to test it more.
When I changed the tyres on mine I used a motion pro bead buddy for the first time and it did make it easier.

Just thought i would update you all on a part i had on back order from WK since February which just arrived today. I think they sent it by rowing boat via the artic.......anyhow its the left side switch gear which packed up on the high low beam soon after buying the bike and although with some fettling got it working i felt it was a weak point and it would be good to get a spare. So arrived today my initial concern was that its very different to the origonal and thought they had sent the wrong part.....................see pics..............however after a quick plug in and test all was well so installed properly and it feels 100% better quality, especially the high low beam switch, it has no off switch for the dash, this is just on, saves switching on in tunnels i guess, also it now has a pass/flash switch, the indicator switch is much better as is the horn switch, so im acutally rather pleased. Only small issue is the location pin that sets into the bar is on the other end of the new switch so had to drill a 5mm hole so no real issue, the pin is also metal on the new one not plastic as on the old one so all good

Hi netsonic, my switch did the same thing, I've bodged it temporarily so that the main beam is permanently on and I have no high beam. How much was your new switch? I've bought one for a royal Enfield which is much better quality (I've got one fitted to my morini) but I would have to change all the connections to fit it.

It was £28.43, all in delivered, more than they quote on their parts site but considering its an improved version seems reasonable. My guess is Shineray has understood the old switch had a weak point and have improved the design. Interestingly the kill switch has been changed as well but happy with the one i have. If we ever see the new ABS version it should have both switch upgrades, wonder what else is different

Hi guys, I bought Graham’s bike above and he didn’t hide the fact, but the bike is very smokey – a lot more than just running in smoke. I have no issue with Graham, I got it at a very good price, but I do need to move forward with the problem. Initially I noticed that the breather system was completely blocked, so I cleaned this out and this was a massive improvement but not quite right. I then removed the tank and noticed a crushed emissions pipe and sorted that out, only a minor improvement. Next the oil level seemed high, so I changed the oil and filter (and also the gauze at the bottom of the frame), took it out for another run (10+ miles), but its just still belching white smoke on tick over (see video below). The breather system vent pipe is also filling with water – which is very, very strange – maybe just condensation? I tried changing the plug as I wanted to do a compression test to prove the rings, but my 18mm socket spanner didn’t fit, and after reading up, it’s a bugger to change out without a very thin wall socket. Anyway to cut a long story, slightly shorter. I am going to bite the bullet and change the rings and get the bore polished. Question is, as it’s a copy of XR400 engine, can I buy Honda parts or uprated aftermarket Honda parts and pop them in (hopefully a better quality and readily available). This is a video of the smoke, just back from a good run, so bike is hot, Cheers and thanks for any feedback – apart from the above, there have just been minor, easily fixable items, sticking throttle (Graham may want some Moroccan sand back on that one!), I shortened and cranked out the side stand (as it fell over twice in one day!) and a few minor electric issues. So hopefully, I can use Honda parts and hopefully get out on a properly soon! Phil

I was always under the impression that white smoke would be water or coolant but stand to be corrected. I just sold an XR400 that had needed the valves, new piston and the cylinder re-bored as it was burning too much oil. There was no smoke with that at all, just an oily deposit at the back of the exhaust and rear mudguard. You could stick a piece of white paper at the back and see what deposits it's leaving.
It would be unusual to only get a few thousand miles from a piston and rings. Definitely worth doing a plug and compression check before stripping it back.
Also does it start straight away on the button? The XR was a fu**er to start once the valves and rings started leaking.

It starts real easily and well.
Also, I should have said that when I removed the air filter to blow it through, there was a thin layer of fine dust in the air intake (ie the filtered air side), so it not inconceivable that the bore has been damaged, even at 1700 miles. Also when I cleaned the breather system, there was a lot of yellow residue in there (sand dust?)
Parts are cheap enough though, I just dont wont to buy Honda XR400 parts if its known that they are different?
Thanks
