There are alternative sources for third party stator windings as per my links above with varied results.

Many great opinions & advice offered here. The question you need to ask yourself is (Dirty Harry style)...are you Sniper (fix it when its broke) or are you a prevention is better than cure [strike]gay[/strike] guy. ;) ..sorry..too good to pass over!

Sometimes the failures(unexpected) make the trip...but its the ones that could be avoided through JUST a little planning that cause me to lose more hair!

We want a ride report on the strength of the advice you are getting!

ohers have covered all the "known weak points" with good advise.
My contribution must be mosquito protection (head net + bug spray) and something to prevent the sidestand sinking in gravel/grass.
Scandinavia (spes Norway) is painfully expensive, but if your weather holds it is fantastic.
Don't get caught speeding - the fines will leave you shaking.
Norway and Sweden have free ranging animals, both wild and domestic. An elk the size of a volkswagen is no joke. Last year 3 mc fatalities.

Wild camping is allowed in Norway.
Current petrol prices with the exchange rate the way it is are about £1.40 to £1.60/l
depending when and where you fill.
Loads of places in Norway to see, let me know roughly where you are planning
and I can give you some pointers.

I am very much as believer in riding older bikes where you know what the issues are and then sorting things before they break. Can make for very reliable travels and I have no fear taking my 84 K100RT around Europe. I carry tools to do basic jobs but inspections like brake pads, services and so on mean little to go wrong unexpectedly. However any known alternator or starter issues I would deal with and have done in my case.
