(thumbs) Been following the Brits on Eurosport every night, great coverage ,especially for Lydon who,s so far is making a great effort. Lots of gloom and doom merchants on this forum at the moment critisizing and cynical, hey ho there entitled to their opinion.

Re: 2017 DAKAR rally...wtf...!!!
Rallye Raid is a very small sport here in the UK participant wise. There are lots of Rallyes that are supported by UK teams but it isn't a cheap sport. Just the distance involved getting the bikes and equipment to the start line costs a lot. This puts a lot of people off. But it is a great sport with a great camaraderie between competitors (usually). And at events like the Hellas in Greece you get to compete in the same event as some big names. In 2015 Sam Sunderland and Mathius Walkner were there for the KTM factory.
As for the Dakar, my opinion is that it was better in Africa (as a TV spectator). But things move on. Commercially South America has a much better return on investment for manufactures and sponsors.
It is the pinicle of Rallye Raid, but maybe it has lost some of the 'Adventure' that the African editions had. See Africa Race if that's more your thing, and it is much more achievable as an a amateur entrant.
For The Dakar you have to qualify to be considered for a starting place. It's no longer pay and play.
Still one of the toughest sporting events though.

As AndyH said, the real source of up to the minute info is on advrider racing forum, the F5rehose thread if you can keep up with it. Abr is not the place for it.
As Paul said, you can get a flavour of rally raid from Hellas, Serres and several other good value events. It's still going to be minimum £2800 plus suitable bike, kit, tyres, mousses, nav kit etc.
