Which GS?

It's also worthconsidering fuel consumption vs other makes if you plan big miles.
XT1200 - uses loads of gas, day in, day out year after year.
KTM - uses a lot of fuel for the first 10k then doesn't use any.
GS11/1150 - very similar to the XT12
GS1200 - these vary, lots initially then none (shaft seal gone), lots then none (gearbox gone), lots then none (total shaft failure) ....

Cruise at 100mph tops out at 125mph, so probably fast enough, I met a couple out in Romania on their way back from China two-up on a GS800, no issues.
Lighter and way more economical than any make of 1000/1200.
They lack a bit of road presence over say a GS1200 and some top gear stomp, but they are physically more manageable both on or off road.

Is that why you want another Boxer GS?

Worst I ever saw was 74.6mpg!!! So unbelievable I even took a picture, but that was on a run with a bunch of Harleys. Usually it shows about 54.
It's most likely doing the usual 10% lie

I had a 2002 1150 GS for 3 years. It was certainly well made but I have to say that I never really bonded with it. I've had my R100GS (archaic airhead thingy) since 1990 and still use it for touring.

I think the 1150 is considered to be the last properly built BMW. The 1200 has always been aimed at the mass market following the E&C boost to BMs image and most of the usual BMW quirks have been ironed out . It has now been developped into to the current sanitised electronic Japanese copy that it is.

That said, I've ridden every version of the 1200 since it first arrived in 2004 and enjoyed them all. I would never own one myself as they seem to have become adventure rider uniform and are always found in groups. Also much too complex for just a motorbike.

I'm Mr Impulse-Purchase Johnny, and I do like the GS1200, I've had three and one GS1150.
My 800 was sat in a crate for 3 months waiting to be shipped back home.....so I did ponder on other bikes.
But....an enforced 3 months pondering time lead me to the conclusion that the 800 was a better bike for me.
It makes more power than the GS1100, it has a better power/weight ratio than the 1150 and it's less of a twats bike than the 1200!

Power and weight isn't everything, a 1150 will handle better on the road than the 800

Last Sunday I was out in the Dales, I was on the heaviest bike (Triumph Print ST and Honda AT CRF1000) and had the least power too

I had to slow down to let the others keep up (they had both had speeding tickets this year and weren't slow in a straight line) in my mirrors

They were both surprised how a bike so heavy........... rides so well

I know Johnny, the GS/GSA1150 or 1200 would be a better road tourer and I love the handling.
I think the 800 is better for me as an All-Roads touring bike. I was making the power comparison just to emphasise that a little 800 is not at all underpowered.
Here's my mate Guther on his GSA (with his Jack Russell on the tank) setting an amazing time on The Tail of The Dragon
