Devon & Cornwall

Some may remember a recent thread about taking my 9 year old on his first father & son bike trip.

I've decided to do a tour around Devon and Cornwall.

Believe it or not, I've never been there on holiday. I've been to meetings in Exeter and Plymouth, and used Plymouth as a ferry port, but motorway straight in and straight out, but I know NOTHING about Devon and Cornwall.

So all info and recommendations welcome....

A few places worth a visit but depends on things he really likes. Been there with mine at that age so....

St Michaels Mount, walk across the causeway and explore a bit of history. Go while tide is rising so he can see what's happening. If you end up wanting a faster exit you can take a boat back instead of waiting for the tide to drop again. If it's a good day there is a great beach there too. Was 1999 Eclipse when we were there and it was a temporary camp site but with good facilities. We were a short distance from the Mount and went to the Mount on 3 days. They loved having the beach and a few things near us. Don't underestimate the value of beach time with him if weather is good.

Eden Project. Interesting and wasn't completed when we were there. He may like it or may find it too much for a day but most I think would be fascinated by it.

Tin mines. http://www.poldarkmine.org.uk/ I can't actually remember where this one was but wasn't too far from Penzance, we went down into caves on a day that was hot and they enjoyed it.

Lands End to my mind is a rip off and complete waste and anti climax. Box ticking maybe.

The Minack Threatre https://www.minack.com/ not far from it and worth a stop. It's an amazing piece of natural architecture. Possibly (?) a bit young for Shakespeare but a day visit might be in order or a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon performance.

When I was taking the kids on camping trips to France we used to do the preparatory exploring together and it does make the whole event much more enjoyable by involving them in the planning and research. Google is your friend here. If you have opportunities of spending time on a computer exploring routes and places its great fun.

Some of the best counties is England with certainly the best coast line

North coast some excellent roads if you are on a bike. Some amazing beaches as well, fantastic coastal path walks.

Lynmouth railway

Tins mines there is one where you go through it on a boat after climbing down lots of ladders can't remember the name though.

Eden project went when it first opened need to go back and see it now

As a 9 year old its some of the activities they will remember.

Redmurty mentioned fishing at Looe. That's a must do really. If he has some catches that will make his holiday.

So is a railway......but having done that one sometimes the dads get more out that than the kids so you bring them along a memory lane trip.

Makes me wish I had a 9 year old to plan these trips with.

He is now a 28 year old and am about to head over to help him to sort out his VFR800Vtec that has the usual Honda electrical problems. Its nice to be asked.

Yes mine have spread their wings and the oldest one has a boyfriend now to go places with :whistle:

What I forgot to add is that sometimes he will call and ask me if I 'want to go for an ice cream' which means a nice bike trip down the coast to a little beach side ice cream kiosk. A long way from my grandad doing the same by coming along in his then Morris Minor to take me along in the back. Times change because he was the same age than as I am now. He changed the Minor for an Anglia, but parked in front of the Anglia under a cover was a Norton Atlas.

Off now for a while.
