What more can the French police do without resorting to grabbing everyone in the camp and putting them in cattle trucks on a train to an unknown destination?

They've used teargas and water cannons, there's no way they'll follow the tactics of the old South African police force and just shoot everyone who doesn't disperse when told to so that leaves them with very limited options :unsure:

The French police do not arrest anyone because if they do, they have to register them in their system which is something the French government do not want. This is why you see the migrants only being forced back to the jungle and not arrested and carted off when they cause the mayhem.

I agree. It's a soft option for the French. What they should do is the following, but quite how they would do it without appearing to be heavy-handed is anyone's guess:

The French should firstly return any illegal economic migrants to their original country.
If they can't get that information from the migrants they should detain them in detention centres around France until they can prove their origin.

Secondly, the genuine asylum seekers out of those migrants should be detained in asylum centres whilst their applications are processed or returned to their first point of entry into the EU where they should then claim asylum in that country.

This is the aspect of the French behaviours I don't understand -presumably a proportion of the Calais mob have entered through borders other than France's but they never seem to talk about sending them back to Spain, Italy, Greece or wherever they entered the EC only bang on about pushing them into our overcrowded little Island.

The news article was about a large mob on migrants who managed to storm onto a P&O ferry. CCTV shows a crowd of them breaching security and flooding over the entry ramp onto the car deck.

Did they really think after they did that P&O were going to say, OK, they're all onboard, pull up ramps and let's take them to England!

I understand these people have nothing to lose, but what were they trying to gain? Or were they just bored and fancied delaying a ferry?

they dont know where to go , get a boat and set sail. might miss the uk and end up on island with no handouts feck that would be worse than being in the camp. we should have sunk them in the med !!! if they wanted a safe place they should have stayed in italy or france,its all about the money same old same old ........

The other thing I don't understand is I was in Wimereux having lunch on Tuesday on the seafront, surrounded by pleasure craft at anchor. If they are so desperate to get to the UK, why don't they go and steal one?

They don't expect the ferry to just set sail, they hope that they will be the one that can hide under or in a truck.
Or find an unlocked Motorhome, van, caravan, anything.
I've been to Morocco a lot over the last 3 or 4 years in a truck or van and they will try to hide anywhere on the vehicle.
The Gas Gas factory rally team had a 6x6 MAN with spare tyres for it mounted on the back. One in each tyre, they were found before loading but just keep on trying.
And as much as I try to keep them off/out of the vehicle they get on/in.
I've had a couple found at Almeria back in Spain under the trailer.
Very difficult to keep them all away. And there is usually only 100 or so at Nador docks.
