Pros:
Amazing mpg; 65-70.
Quite good fun to ride; can chuck it about and pulls well out of corners.
Comfy; I've done lots of high mileage days on my R.
Reliable; Lots of miles and the only trouble has been bad electrical connectors and bearings.
Leccys easiy cured by greasing all the connectors.
I just swap the bearings and seals every year before a big trip.
Cons;
Bit slow; it's a big old single. But 100mph is achievable!
Suspension is budget. A Wilburs rear shock, Racetech springs and emulators have made a huge difference to mine.
Great bike for travelling. Some of thse miles have been consecutive days of thrashing it down motorways for hours.
Can be used for light laning but it's a road bike really.

Re: Yam 660xt
I had an 09 Z and prior to that an 08 R. They were both brilliant. I only sold the Z to get a bigger S10 for a big 2 up trip.
The Z was a bit top heavy when on its side (in fact the S10 is easier to pick up !) but it is very easy to ride and I only have a 29" inseam.
The performance on and off road was a good compromise as a do it all bike. I was gobsmacked one year when at the IOM TT when I had a ride out from Port St Mary to Peel (up the SW coast road) with a Ducati 916, a CBR 600 and another sports bike. I left them all for dust without trying and I am NOT a fast rider. The bike was just so easy to use even with semi knoblies on. The only time they caught me was on the way back on the Islands Centre long straights.

light laning? looks at the tube what people do with this bike, quite heavy offroad.MarkR wrote: Can be used for light laning but it's a road bike really.
It's not road bike, it's a bad road bike (thumbs) Road bike doesn't get long travel suspension, bush plate, big ground clearance, folding gear lever etc etc. Stock suspension is good enough unless you race.

Re: Yam 660xt
It's let down badly with it's suspension when it comes to serious off roading, but I had mine fully laden up with panniesr and camping gear and managed the strata florida, obviously not as well as those on ktm's but it managed it.
Re: Yam 660xt
Me too 12-14 hour 500 mile days on my standard R seat without getting a sore butt. X is the same seat. Maybe getting confused with a DRZ 400?Emf#53 wrote:Maybe the R has a different shape seat as I found mine very comfy for a standard seat - unlike the standard seat on an 800GS which I found terrible.SPEN wrote:I've had 3 Xt660x's and a 660 z , great going bike for a single ,very reliable ,both have skinny seats which cut the arse off you and the Z seat pushes you into the tank crushing your balls.I've ridden both around scotland, doing over 350 miles a day on both bikes !! and i'd take anyone of them again without a second thought !!! and i also live in NI (thumbs)

It's biggest limitation off road on the R is ground clearance. You can get new exhaust headers that route round the side rather than sling underneath.
Suspension is pretty crap, but just ride slower.

I'm sure Mark will be pleased to know that when he sets off in about 2 weeks time on another 5k mile road trip he's on a bad road bike :laugh:robson wrote:light laning? looks at the tube what people do with this bike, quite heavy offroad.MarkR wrote: Can be used for light laning but it's a road bike really.

It's strange that he's got a K1100RT but he chooses to use an XT660 for his road trips :pinch:
Re: Yam 660xt
Great bikes, had a 660r now on a 660z, love it, not fast or flash but just gets on with the job, I have 1200ten as well, also a great bike, but tend to use it more for two up stuff. Even when I had my 1200gs i'd still end up taking the 660 most of the time if solo, gonna hang on to mine for a long time (thumbs)
Chaos is the only camouflage that incompetence needs to operate at full capacity.
I dunno where that road goes, might as well go take a look anyway there's no where else i need to be right now.

I know. I rode it from Wales to Morocco last summer.robson wrote:light laning? looks at the tube what people do with this bike, quite heavy offroad.MarkR wrote: Can be used for light laning but it's a road bike really.

It was far more at home on the tarmac than on the trails.
I do a lot of laning and I gave up doing it on the XT and bought an EXC.
Just my own experience of course...
