Hi Folks, I have just moved to Ulaanbaatar. Have not seen a single motorcycle yet as it is -20 to -30 C. Hope to get some trail riding in during the summer though.

Any of you folk planning to adventure through these parts this year are more than welcome to look me up for a place to stay.

I am brewing the idea of mimicking aussie c90 guy and flying to ulaanbaatar, buying a small bike, kitting myself out in monogol style and heading west.

it would be interesting to hear your opinion of how long would I need to get through that famous market and get prepared. what kind and for how much are the bikes there? anything cheap above 125? can you buy some rigid leather panniers and mongol clothing? also have you got any experience with insurance for foreigners?

Got bogged down in settling in so sorry for no reply it is just my second week here. It is very early days for me yet, but happy to do some research for you.

I have not been to the market yet but will see what is on offer. Of course what they sell now may be different to summer stuff.

Like I say I have not seen a bike yet or anywhere that sells them. What I did see a month or so back was a westerner (Brit/German?) http://www.bikemongolia.com/motorbikes_for_sale.html who operates adventure biking tours, and he was selling off some used KTMs (450EXC?). If you contacted him(them) you would get a better source of info than I can provide just now.

Hi Brendhen - for my sins it is monitoring forests from earth observation satellites. Mongolian steppe is severely degraded because of overgrazing since they adopted a market economy following the end of Soviet influence, which has created pressure on the northern forests. There is a UN led climate change initiative which is initially focused on preserving tropical forests but is now looking at the boreal forests of Mongolia. It is all based around performance based subsidies from the developed countries for what is perceived as a quick fix to reducing CO2 emissions. Deforestation accounting for 15-20% of global CO2 emissions. My job is to help account/estimate the changes in forest carbon.

Some of us will be riding out, others will be flying out to rent local bikes.

Hi Dave, sounds like a great trip, dont know that far ahead yet what I will be doing. I only have a one year contract for now though it could be extended for up to 3 years. but if I am still here glad to assist maybe even join you for some excursions if work permits. Cheers Richard.
