The dealer needs to make a living i understand that,but i expect a fair price for my 12gs to get a win win situation.dealers are selling a 13 plate gs at 9.5 - 11.5
so i exspect a bit more than 8k

Why? He's not a BMW dealer so he'll probably flog it nearer to the £9.5k, giving you £8k means he's only got £1500 quid and out of that he needs to service it, MOT if it's old enough, sort out out any minor damage, put tyres and brakes on if needed, valet it, then reclean every time its test ridden, insure it against theft, damage and for test rides, store it in a showroom for a couple of months, pay for advertising on the likes of autotrader, pay the sales persons salary every time someone enquires about it.....and still make a profit.

£1500 quid is the bare minimum he needs to make on the bike to make it worth even talking to you.

I run a bicycle shop. When asked for a part exchange I explain the price offered will be borderline insulting, because of everything Ralph detail in the post above. Selling bikes is not easy, and it costs money.

If it was easy to sell your bike, you would do it yourself. Give it a go first.

Had a look through eBay I see all the bikes under 10k have a lot more mileage on them or they are x off road skill bikes

That's a retail price

At £7900 trade in, the dealer will stick £1000-£1500 on top when he sells it to the next punter

How else is he gonna stay in business unless he makes £1500 out of you

Trade & retail are completely different

Plus a bike advertised at £10k isn't going to sell for that, once a bit of haggling goes on

There are too many about, too many were/are being sold on cheap finance & therefore as said, mcn & eBay are awash with them

He's offered you a hassle free deal which you are not happy with so you've either got to search for a better deal or do some donkey work yourself and sell yours. Is there somebody out there with a spare £9k cash who wants a bike with no warranty?

Don't forget the VAT element.
The dealer will have to pay the Gov 20% on the difference between the buy/sell price whether he's spent a couple of hundred quid on refurbing the bike or not......thats another £300 quid out of the so called £1500 profit.

Most people paying £9k for a bike want some form of warranty which is why they use dealers. Obviously those warranties have to be paid for by the dealer which yet again eats into their margins.

When I traded in my Multistrada I would have liked more for it but I considered the big service it was due, the new tyres it needed and the emulsion in the oil that had burned off nicely when the dealer looked at it and took what was offered

When trading in my bike for the new Africa twin, I was more than happy with the trade in deal, I also got a fair discount on the accessories .i was told by victor Devine the dealer who Iv known since t he age o f 16, a and trust, that he would only make a profit ,when he sells my nc700X.
