Interesting study in the US showing that if all the motorbikes stopped filtering they would increase considerably the time it takes cars to go from A to B due to the extra road space taken up.

Filtering is illegal in most US states.

When I switched from riding an Italian V-twin cafe racer to a DR350 I noticed an immediate increase in cars treating me as though I was something to be pushed out of the way.

Back then most learners had 125cc trail bikes, and I was obviously mistaken for one on occasion. I did have 'words' with one or two drivers as a result.

Doesn't seem to happen so much now, and in the last 20 years drivers in London have become less hostile to motorcycles than they were back in the hay-day of motorcycle couriers.

Never considered opening the boot, that's hilarious!
Unfortunately most newer cars the central locking activates once they pass 10mph, but you could always just lift the rear windscreen wiper instead. Anything that makes them have to pull over, stop and get out to rectify it has the same effect.

Did manage to bounce the crash bars/pannier box off the side of a Merc that cut me up one time. Did not mean to, was filtering and he closed the gap on me. What goes around, comes around. The French med coast road was always was packed.
Followed one bloke right to his house after he tail gated me riding a bike on the motorway, told him exactly what I thought of his F-ing stupid driving. Wanker.

However bad you think it is for motorcycles - its a lot worse for cyclists. My normal commute on a bike is normally incident free but on the push bike I've had so many near misses. Bicycles are really not viewed as being a valid road user by many people.

It works all ways because a few years back I was queuing to get through the Tyne tunnel and had moved right over to the left to allow a bike to get through and because his mirrors were at the same height as mine he reached over and twisted mine out of his way. When I caught up with him later at a set of lights I hopped out of my van and moved his mirrors for him which seemed to cause him a fairly high degree of stress (thumbs)

The moral of this one is to treat others as you'd hope they'd treat you. If you want to block people expect to be blocked yourself at some point and if you want to mess with other peoples vehicles expect yours to be messed with in return. He was quite lucky because a lot of people would have given him a punch or rammed him but I was happy just to move his mirrors a bit so he knew what his crime was.

"you don't pay road tax you don't so you should not be on the road" reply "nothing stopping you learning to ride and not paying tax, plus you get the extra benefit of getting rid of some of that pork mate" the git nearly had me at the next set of lights

Thanks for the replies Guys!

I was on a bit of a rant, but like a lot of folks have posted, you mostly have to be philosophical and just take it as it comes...

Thinking about it now, the left turn off of the mini roundabout leads back through some residential roads to where the drivers in my lane had come from, and that's where the car turned off, so not more that a few yards from where they tried to smack me into the bollard. I can't see a reason why anyone would have being going the same way as me, then suddenly turn and head back pretty much to where they'd come from?

Maybe they realised that they'd just red-mist attempted to actually cause a biker some serious harm and felt ashamed, so fecked off down a side road, maybe they suddenly realised that I'd braked to a stop, and I'm quite a heavily-built tall guy wearing a crash helmet and armoured gloves, and I might just step off my bike, walk over to their car and "Have A Word"...

Still, it's a good reminder to me to keep aware of what's going on, on the road around me, I guess :)

Or block people, get your vehicle messed with.

Already hasn't treated me how I'd like to be treated, so what form the consequence takes, irrelevant really.

I'm not going to get my vehicle messed with, because I treat people how I'd like to be treated. And I don't mess with the vehicles of people who treat me how I like to be treated.

Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'.

Not saying the OP did this + the silly cow's actions were outrageous, but when is filtering reasonable and when is it just "pushing in"?

Clearly it's legal and reasonable to filter if there is space to pass safely and space to fit into when pulling back in the lane, but what about when the rider has to force his/her way into too small a space at the front of the queue?
