How old is that tyre?

Post by Alun »

Is there any way of telling the age of a tyre and does the age make that much of a difference? The reason I ask is that the Tiger came with a couple of tyres with loads of tread left on them but the previous owner had only put about 2,000 miles on them in a 3 year period. he did not know the age of the tyres

As I'm off on a tour around the Alps in a couple of weeks time should I be looking at changing them or are they as good as the ammount of tread left?

Treadtrader - hurry up back to answer this one!

They do deteriorate , but it depends on how they have been stored , heat and sunlight are , I understand , particularly bad for tyre.

I would just give them a very close inspection , check for signs of perishing on the side walls and in between the tread blocks , if they look OK I would go with that !!

They do have tyre depots , even in Europe !! if the worst comes to the worst!!:)

Ha ha, yes I keep telling people through Adventure Travel magazine that they sell t-shirts outside the UK too. When it comes down to it what you pack hardly matters as a great part of the adventure is sorting out whatever comes your way when out of town. Thanks Jack, you've brought me down to ground and helped me make a decision - no panniers, just a top box.

I'm travelling light - I'll load it all on Jasons bike.

Back in the 80's , we did a gite holiday in France and drove there in my (then)trusty Ford Escort estate. I was packing all sorts of stuff - fan belts , antifreeze , spare plugs etc etc , when my mate reminded me that it was a Ford Escort I was taking and the local spanner monkeys in Brittany had probably seen one before !!!.

Right I'm back!

All tyres have a DOT code which contains a date code----- Last 4 numbers eg- 4608 means tyre was manufactured week 46 2008.
The general advice is to not run tyres older than Five years (Caravan Club etc) but a thourough inspection by a tyre pro is best.

On the spares front, give the bike a thourough service and just take a credit card!!!!

Very comfy for both rider and pillion, good perfomance and cruising speeds on motorways, but.......

Bloody thirsty!! only 160 miles per tank!
Think i may have to tweak the carbs.

Managed to get a genuine Triumph pillion seat from a local shop in Ireland, O'busters i think.

I've been looking for one of those - do they do them in Red?

Now that the Tiger re-build is bedding in and I've been opening the throttle a touch I'm getting 150 out of a tank full which is about 20 less than on the sprint, and they both have the same engine.
