There are a lot of campsites all along the 'Mittel Mosel', including Cochem and the villages along the river downstream (towards Koblenz) and upstream (towards Trier). They will all be bike friendly and reasonably cheap.

A campsite in Cochem or near to it might suit you better if you're staying for 5 days or so, as it's the biggest town between the cities of Trier and Koblenz and therefore has more things to entertain you for longer (don't expect busy hussle-bussle mind, as it's still only a sleepy Mosel town, full of old folkies, like most of the Mosel!) It's also a good base to go out to other places.

In general, it's a good time to visit the Mosel, as it's starting to look it's best in the early Autumn colours and there are lots of wine festivals on. It's our favourite time here.

Nothing against the site in Zeltingen that Sid is at for the 25th SuperTenere anniversary meet, but it is basic and not the most picturesque. It was chosen I think, because they'd been to Zeltingen before, staying at our place, it's a good base for getting around and the village wine festival is on this weekend. If your missus likes a bit more comfort, you might want to think about another site. I don't know any of them in the Cochem area, but you could probably just turn-up and take a look, as you should get a pitch easily enough. When you travel along the river you can't miss them, there are so many, just look for the caravans (which predominate, but they all usually take tents too). You could also call at the tourist office in Cochem, just under the bridge.

Give me a shout if I can help in any way.

you can't really go wrong in the Mosel Valley, riding and looking about is good anywhere, ride down the river from Cochem to Trier, or take off into the hills/surrounding area's

The scenery is pretty nice all along the Mosel and the hill ranges either side of it, once you leave the valley - the Eifel, with its volcanic craters, lakes and quaint villages and old forests and the Hunsruk, with open farmland and forests.

It's often difficult to suggest 'must do's', as people like different things + I'm not sure if you're looking to ride out for days or base yourself in Cochem and use bus/train/bicycle/boat (a good network covering the whole area - which means you can drink all the lovely wine and beer on offer!). Some come for the walking (stunning along the valley tops looking down), some for the wine (mainly high quality Riesling) and visits to the vineyards, producers and museums, others for the riding on the brilliant roads, yet others for WWII attractions. Some things you might consider:

- Koblenz (if you like cities) and a visit to Deutche Ecke at the confluence with the Rheine, by train from Cochem, or a circular ride, across the Hunsruk to the Rheine valley, then up to Kolenz and along the Mosel back to Cochem.
- Trier (again, if you like cities) Germany's oldest with Roman buildings, Baroque square and interesting cathederal. Again, nice train ride to it and ack, along the river.
- ride into Luxembourg, to Vianden/Larochette/Echternach and 'little Switzerland'
- ride/bus/cycle into the Eifel, taking in the Vulcan volcanic area, perhaps the Nurburgring (worth a look even if not riding) and on to the quaint picture-postcard village of Monschau, complete with canals and oldy worldy timber buildings.
- Cochem itself, has boat trips (various lengths) to see the valley from the river, chair lift to good views at top and lunch at restaurant, the castle of course (though Burg Eltz is better, nearby, close to Klotten and Tries Karten and lots of places to eat and drink and be merry
- all along the Mosel there are festivals at the end of September. Pick one and go for a day/night out, to see what the locals get up to. You can get a programme of all the places/dates at the tourist office.
Hope this helps. PM me if you want anything more specific on routes or whatever.

Most years I camp at Koblenz, 2 min ferry ride or 15 min walk from centre of town, great place with fun atmosphere. Andy

+1 for a base near Cochem, such a nice place to stay and good rail network should a day off the bike be called for. Was there last year staying in Klotten, should be there again on Sunday. Plenty to do as mentioned as above, I'm hoping to do more of the little Switzerland this time. (thumbs) have a great trip, I will try and post picks when back (thumbs)
