Should I buy the best chain/sprocket set?

Post by g00ner »

For my little WR200 greenlaner?
Wemoto list two choices, an x-ring sealed chain @ £100 or an unsealed one at £45? If it was my main bike I wouldn't hesitate but for greenlaning? No more than 500 miles a year on something that weighs <100kgs? Will I regret saving the extra cash?

Opinions please before I splurge (thumbs)

This is probably the best chain you can buy. DID VX2.

Buy the sprockets separately.

Buy the best you can afford. No only will it make maintenance a lot easier but it will help with the resale value. Nobody wants a poundland chain (thumbs)

it's not in the cash, but that £45 chain is without o/x-rings and it is a prefered chain for small cc underpowered bikes. it does not mean it is any weaker, unless wemoto did their application selection wrong. it will require attention, eg regular oiling, but with suck up much less power from the engine whatever it has.

imho road bike maintenance rules do not always apply to small offroaders, especially if you do mere 500mls/year. the chain will rust quicker than wear out :P

I have been lured into this trap before thinking its an old bike with not much power so will get a budget chain. Costs in the end, the budget chains lasts for one or two rides, you get sick of keep adjusting them, then buy the one that you should have in the first place.

Buy a good one.

Yeh, mate - chain and sprockets are basically your drive train, only other thing really are tyres IMO. If your engine breaks, you stop... If your chain breaks you stop, but may lose a foot :/

If you lose a foot then you only have to buy one boot, and socks become half price :silly:
