Ok I stand corrected, everyone who uses the trails is perfect and its those nasty Walkers making it appear like we are all irresponsible ne'er do wells by using ingenious machines to put Tyre tracks into the soft ground at the side of the trails. Now that is sneaky tactics:o

Not parking.
4x4's
If there were any trees nearby They'd have chain marks on.
These guy's use the verges because they know they're soft & churn up easily.
The main tracks usually have a laid hard sub-strata.

Which is why Northamptonshire Council has exactly the right idea, when they TRO most of the lanes to 4x4 from October to April, but leave them open for motorbikes.

Why would they come off the perfectly usable trail next to it if they were using it purely as access?

Why indeed? because they are 21 years old and have been given a company van/4x4 possibly? Fact is it just gets the lanes closed no matter who did it :( I was on Salisbury Plain New Years day it was covered in 4x4s the majority perfectly legal but there were a few off the beaten track...did they know? did they care? hard to stop just like the mx bikes with no plates.

The really annoying thing is that we (me on foot and my missus on horseback) were passed by 4 guys on smaller ktm's who were great and gave us plenty of room and respect but it is the damage that the public sees and remembers. Alot of damage to our image done by that small minority.

As a member of the TRF (other organisations are available for the 4x4 boys & girls), it is very hard, nearly impossible to get the info off the trf members to do routes yourself. Without making a mistake now and then, as a more or less closed shop, some folks will not pay and just want to ride/drive. I use memory map, councils, trailwise. os maps etc but it is a lot of work that we dont always have.

having been out weekend after weekend, i find the 4x4 crews fairly decent people and pull over on to verges to give way to US on motorcycles (maybe off-piste). The farmers brigade who do their thing and go shooting etc park everywhere and fair play to them.

unless we all stick together, use each other information, each others organisations (TRF, LARA, Farmer union, shooting clubs, bridle clubs, mountainbikers etc) we will lose them.

Despite what some think, the walkers need to be brought onside- best to keep your enemies near!!!!!

Some joined up co-operation is required.

I ride as legally as i can but yes, i do have to go on grass verges, off piste etc to avoid others the same as i do on highways.

Nope definitely 4x4 use. The Tyre tracks are a dead give away.
If it is 4x4 use, it's nothing to do with "us" then is it?

I fully support the exclusion of 4x4 from Green Lanes, many TRF groups campaign hard for "bike only" amendments to TRO's.

We all know bikes cannot create the type of damage the 4x4 morons cause.

For so long as we align ourselves with the 4x4 lobby, we are like Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Once considered buying a Land Rover & bought a LR mag. There was an article about an off-road run (somewhere in Shropshire) & the photo's depicted vehicles stuck in deep mud roped to trees, one of which they claimed to have pulled down in their attempts to get out.

I'm afraid it is as we have publicly aligned ourselves with them. I am all for this but they need to realise that if this is to continue they need to help maintain our public image. I know it is a minority and that the minority exists within the bike community as well but we seem more likely to challenge and condemn this behaviour than they are.
