The problem of byway 12 can't be separated from closure of a section of M344.

Sorry I would not use either France or (especially) Italy as example of how to manage heritage. I am not always a fan of English Heritage but given the visitor pressure on what is essentially a grassland landscape this seems a workable scheme.

probably the number one reason they want to close itScott_rider wrote:and in fact you can get a good vierw of the Stones from it which is a bonus.Seadog wrote:Aloss of revenue)
2) This is very fragile archaeological landscape and sorry there is no justification for motorized recreational use on this specific right of way I am happy to defend others but if you can't see the problem here, especially given the relatively abundant trails in the region you do not know where to pick your fights.

At the PI, the inspector listened to English Heritage bang on about its 'vision' and the environmental damage that motorbikes would do but its land trains and wardens in 4x4s would not...then found that motorcycles were not causing any environmental damage to the monument or its surroundings at all.
There was once an airfield close to the stones (Airman's Corner is the clue) and the Royal Flying Corps wanted to remove the stone circle altogether to extend it! The army wanted to use it for artillery practice.
Stonehenge has been there in one form or another for many thousands of years, and was rebuilt, as my picture showed, in the 1920s by blokes with string vests using a steam-driven crane. I don't think a few of us old duffers pottering past on our motorbikes is going to have any impact at all.
"Fragile grassland landscape" My Arse! If it wasn't for the hand of man (and the passage of vehicles) it would be engulfed in brambles with the occasional stunted alder tree poking out.
This is how it used to look, before it was turned into Disneyworld

Re: Stonehenge.........Grrr
Agree with Richard. I've ridden past it several times over the years--any damage to the lane in the area is from people parking up, travellers etc, not from the odd trail bike or passing 4x4. The rest of the area is farmed pretty seriously skirting around the odd burial mound--and the open grasslands of the plain are pretty well preserved by the Army, (and unexploded ordnance) keeping us all on the established tracks. Lets face it its purely a cash cow exercise. Go a bit further west and visit Avebury and Silbury hill where you CAN get close, and arguably the construction is more impressive.(and there are trails that get you VERY close to some standing stones)
There will be a real fight if they attempt to close the byway--there are simply no grounds for doing so.

There are standing stones in people's gardens in Avebury.
I expect English Heritage would evict them given the chance.

It may come as a surprise but we don`t all own £15,000 bikes with loads of expensive accessories  the fees are unreasonable on the grounds that they wouldn't` be necessary if they weren`t there to pay for the 27 million wasted on the visitors centreSeadog wrote: However I do find it amazing how people on here with extremely expensive bikes, who then spend vast sums on accessories are so tight over other things - on what planet are the admission fees unreasonable
