Not read this whole thing but ..... is it really that easy to leave a job you've been in over 20 years and mortgage to go rtw!? It must be I suppose as plenty of people seem to but too much for me - I'll stick to a week away here and there. Does that me less of a man? I think not.

Definitely not but the article, and original post, concerned whether Austin was frustrated about not receiving the 'recognition/Kudos' whatever you want to call it in light of LWR and the 'fame' associated with it.

Austin's fundamental points (as far as I'm aware) is that an 'adventure' is well within the reach of everybody - it depends on how you define such things. He is also totally correct in the fact that you do not need all the bling. If you want it that's fine, but you should never use its lack as an excuse not to do it - if that is what you want to truly do. As many have said, you can do it on any bike at all really.

While this is true, some people can have all the time, money and even the 'best blingerised' bike but they will still find excuses not to do it. Because, fundamentally, they do not want to. They want to live in the (armchair) dream of doing it and that dream can last until there is no more time to find out.

That is fine as well.

I have to make do with a 2 week holiday away on the bike in the summer, a couple of other long weekend trips to Europe over the summer then a week away in winter. It's a tough life having to exist like this but I'm realistic enough to know that I need to work to pay the bills and pay for my holidays so I just get on with it

I'm pretty lucky because I've visited a lot of different countries through my job and some of them I've stayed in for extended periods so I've seen a fair bit of the World. While I haven't ridden to those countries I've owned bikes in a couple of them and hired them in plenty of others so I guess I haven't done too badly.

apart from memories what would you have at the end?

I "adventure bike" (wow, I've turned a noun into a verb...) for the people I meet, the things I see and the experiences I have. When I've done them, all that's left is: The memories (and the photos/videos/diary entries that help keep the memories alive). In the end, everything we do in life "only" end up as memories.

Different people want different memories. I want memories of having done stuff.

A pedantic observation: It's about 34000km from the UK to Magadan and back. Not the mileage on the bike before it left!
