Who services their own bikes?

+1 To GB's comment, I too have never heard of not changing the filter.
If people want to practice or exercise that as an option that is their prerogative; however I take the view that for £5 or so I'd rather not bathe fresh expensive oil in a dirty filter, as the filter is just that; something that takes the impurities out of the oil.
To me it is akin to washing myself in dirty bath water.

I've used dealer servicing on my previous GS and my current 990Adv (only had the run in service so far).

Given the fairly short service intervals on the KTM ("it's a performance engine Sir") I'd like to do at least some of the work myself, even just the oil changes, but the manual is clear about warranty implications i.e. it must be dealer serviced. As mentioned in one of the posts above I thought that this wasn't enforceable so long as the bike was serviced to correct standards by a VAT registered mechanic - that's certainly the case with my car. Either way I'm not a VAT registered mechanic so ...

Is anyone out there home servicing a NEW bike and if so what has been the status on any warranty issues?

Yes i do. I have the first 600 mile service done by the dealer, then i service it myself. My current two bikes have not needed any warranty work doing in the two years i've had them, but my previous Suzuki did (minor corrosion issue) and that was also serviced by myself. My dealer doesn't even ask to see my service book before they did the warranty work and they know i service it myself.... but i do have a good relationship with my dealer.
When i bought a new Triumph Tiger, i had many warranty issues, and they always inspected the service book thoroughly... and i had to have it serviced by Triumph main dealer. Which i believe they are breaking EC law by stipulating this, but i didn't want to chance having warranty disputes so i complied with their T&C's begrudgingly.
So in my experience i've been ok servicing my bikes from new with no warranty problems.... as long as they are Japanese bikes.

Every other filter change is normal on every 4-stroke bike I have ever owned... according to Haynes or owners manuals.

But Zookman - Bandit engines are not bulletproof - only those owned by the peeps who knew how to maintain them are

I sold my 1200 on with over 50K on the clocks, still didn't burn oil, have rattly cams or ovaled emulsion tubes like so many I heard of or saw with half the mileage.

Once out of warranty - oil was changed every 2k with a new filter and never started it up on the side stand... 7years old and 50K on the clock and still pulled like a train in third when the throttle got whacked open...happy days, just a pity my shoulder couldn't take it any more otherwise I would still have it.

Allways do the service job my self (oils, filters, brakes,cables, etc.....)as do not like hi-tech bikes (over- loaded by electronic devices). With manual, time and roof above head, allways good time.
