plz recommend me a camera

Post by Elle »

Last Wednesday, I took a few pics in drizzle & killed my camera (Ixus 95) :(
Going away in a few days so not much time for research & would appreciate some help finding another. I've considered the following:
- a GoPro
- a Muvi with waterproof case
- a standard compact digital waterproof camera & find a bike mount to fit it
- a standard compact digital and don't use it in the rain

My main concern about buying one that mounts on the bike or helmet is what happens when (not if) I fall off. Should I get extra cover on my house policy?

If buying an Action Cam for mounting on the bars or helmet....

.....DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY OREGON SCIENTIFIC....Such as the ATC9K

I did and it became defective after a few months. NO UK back up, not able to replace parts, the list goes on. See my post under the reviews tab

You would be better getting a GoPro or similar.

Just my tuppence worth.
If I'm not online.............

If you want video footage then GoPro is the best option but they're pricey, the batteries aren't brilliant and you need to take a netbook or similar to download your footage onto or spend nearly as much on memory cards as you would do on a cheap netbook.

If you want stills (inluding shots while you're riding) then you can get a RAM mount with a threaded connection that fits into any camera and you just leave it switched on and press the button when you want to take a photo or if you want to shoot a short bit of video set your camera up ready then do the same. The video won't be as good as you'd get from a GoPro but it'll be ok and you've got the camera for taking stills off the bike.

If it tips it down with rain take the camera off and shove it in your pocket. You can probably find a camera that's waterproof to 5m designed for holiday snaps and use that because it'll have the same M8 hole in the bottom and it'll be a 2 minute job to remove it from the bike.

Can of worms this one but here goes.

Drift HD ghost from my end if you want HD 1080 video.

I spent ages pondering this question months back and then bought the Drift.

Runs great, waterproof so you don't have to worry about it raining (on a motorbike.......).

Lots of settings, remote control easy to use, and it is also App based so I can work everything through the iphone and see what is being recorded - I have a waterproof iphone case mounted on a ram fitting (everything charged from bike). The settings screen without the phone link is small for me (old fart) but if you've good eyes.......

Battery life is much better than GoPro as far as I ever read anywhere and you do not look like a TeleTubby with it mounted on your helmet..... (lights blue touch paper)..... :-)

I'm currently thinking of getting a Replay XD 720.
Simple and straight forward, reasonably rugged and waterproof and I don't really need full HD.
I've also considered the DogCam Bullet, which for around £80 might be OK, but I like the idea of a button that vibrates to let you know the camera is running, which the XD has.

Look at the Nikon AW100 or 110, full hd, GPS to log where you took plus underwater picture and video, I have mine round my neck ready for that quick shot, quick start up time and typical Nikon quality, there is also some good kit from lumix as well. I have a Gopro as well which is nigh on indestructible and gives you loads of mounting options, the best action camera by far but not as good for stills.
Finally back on a GS :D

As others have mentioned there isn't really a one fits all. I use a gopro and lumix ft4 which are both spot on.

Gopro does great stills and the best video I've seen. I'm also gob smacked at the quality of the timelapse stills when it is on the bike. But they ain't cheap. Battery can be a problem but I have a couple of spares from a French company that are spot on and were around £30 for 2 and a charger. I run a 64gb card so not to worry about space. The other option, using the latest firmware you can copy and view over WiFi to your phone. The gopro isn't really any use as a normal camera as there is no view finder or screen on it.

Lumix, cracking little camera. Hd video, great stills, waterproof. You can pick then up for around 140 I think but a tip.. have a look for an ft3 the previous model. Exactly the same camera, the only difference is less GPS names in the memory. I have seen them floating around sub 100 quid. Before I bought the gopro I tried mounting it on the bars. Ok for the odd still but you need a good mounting option as the weight of the camera will cause it to flop about. Also, image stabilisation wasn't upto it for video on the move.

Hope that helps.

Lumix is a great camera - I have used mine sea kayaking, snorkeling (waterproof!) and for general outdoors in all weathers. Has fully protected Leica lens (lens quality is the key to any camera) Have had mine for a few years now - so I know they are good. Not done much video so can't really comment. Has standard tripod screw - so any number of professional camera clamp systems will work.

Mine is the older DMC-FT3 but I note there are similar models going on Amazon for £135.95 (FT25-EBK)
