Apologies for the tardy timing of this element of my story – I’ve just had the Simpson Editorial team round, censoring the content of the next instalment!

NOT

It’s Tuesday, so we must be in Koblenz, right? Before the start of this trip I’d asked Jim, apart from the camp sites at Koblenz and Bokki, where we were headed!
“Just going to ride with the flow” was the answer I got . . . . so go with the flow we did . . . . . the flow of the Rhine! After a leisurely start we headed for the other side of the river and then wound our way south under wonderfully clear skies, passing many picturesque Schloss’s along the way.
We did sort of have a target in mind for the day – the infamous B500 that wends it way through the Schwarzwald below Baden Baden. Not sure where we stopped for lunch, but we did, and then continued south in search of this fabled road. I use the term “fabled”, cos for a good while that’s all it seemed to be – a story from a book written many centuries ago. I think it was around Weisbaden and Mainz that we got sort of lost, with one nag-nav saying this way whilst another said another way. This led to a very long and hot day in the saddle, with temperatures hitting 35 degrees Celcius during the afternoon! Eventually we found our way into the Schwarzwald and found a very rustic campsite near the village of Ottenhoffen im Schwarzwald. No English spoken by the owner and my grasp of the lingo is minimal, which led to us being pointed in the direction of a hillside field away from everyone and every amenity!

We set up our tents and set about the task of filling our bellies, but not before some light entertainment from the newly wedded Mr Simpson. The “facilities” were nailed onto the side of a barn and were not in the best of condition. Locking of the door was, I found, best left to yer derier if you were pointing Percy, or your boot if you were having a Tom Tit. Jim decided to use the rusty nail that was doing duty as a door lock, and it worked a treat. Unfortunately for Jim the actual door handles innards had seen better days back in the late forties (don’t mention the war), so once relieved, his efforts to extract himself from the ramshackleshitter came to a swift end. After about ½ an hour of giggling, pointing and prying, the steel framed bog door gave up it’s hostage and Jim burst into the increasing twighlight with a huge sigh and a few expletives  :woohoo: . Just as well our hosts comprehension of English was virtually nill – not that he’d have understood Jim anyway, even if he could understand English  !
The site, as has been intimated, was a tad basic, but I have endured worse recently. The evening passed very, very quietly, with only a few ales consumed, as we all gawped at the stars and relished the complete and utter silence that surrounded us . . . . . . once certain parties had stopped guffing that is    !

But we still hadn’t found the B500!

The next day saw the sun quickly burning off a slight mist, leading to another superb weather day ahead. Led by Jim we wended our way out of Ottenhoffen im Schwarzwald and headed up into the hills via switchback after switchback, eventually hitting the B500. And so the bend swinging fun began, mile after mile of it, interspersed with an occasional village or huge view over the surrounding hills and valleys. This entertainment led to very few pictures being taken, cos we was having fun. We did happen upon this place as we wended our way south . . . .

Somewhere along the route we grabbed some “doings” and found us a handy layby where we could do what only Brits on Tour do well – have a cuppa and make up a sandwich or two at the side of the road.

During this stop we discussed the matter of fuel, all agreeing that it would be a good idea to fuel up before we crossed into Switzerland. Not 10 miles further on from our stop we found ourselves engaging with a Swiss border guard – Bummocks – we were in Switzerland. Not to worry – we found some manned fuel pumps and filled the machines, then set about finding a camp site.
And here is where we found ourselves . . . . . Merlischachen, on the side of lake Lucerne

Hi Al

Yep, still have a reliable Honda in the shed. The choice for the trip was the F800GS or the Twin!

No competition as far as I was concerned ;)

Ian - we got sorta side tracked en-route! And as I've said, we were sort of "going with the flow"

Switzerland

Before getting here I’d heard lots of stories about getting pulled by the fuzzy-wuzzies for not having one of them there carrot thingies your supposed to have if you use their motorways, but having rolled half way through the country on normal roads before stopping near Lucerne, I can only remember seeing one uniformed official – and he was waving us through the border – nad he was smiling. Don’t remember seeing one Police type persons for the whole 2 days we were in country. Did see loads and loads of military personnel and depots though! For a non-aligned independent country, they do seem to have a lot people in uniform & take their security seriously (unlike Britains politicians). Might have something to do with the fact that they have a period of national service for all citizens once you reach a certain age. Got a slightly weird feeling seeing that many folk in combat gear – No I won’t mention the war!

After Hudders and Fiona took a little paddle / swim in the lake (one willingly, one not so willingly   ), a very pleasant little wander into the village of Merlischachen brought home how it is that everyone thinks of chalet type homes and big cowbells when you mention Switzerland . . . . . or is that just me? Very picturesque, if not a little noisy into the small hours, as all the bovines settled themselves down for the night. There are some pictures of the watery antics, but I thought I’d save you from a certain set of Moobs that emerged from the water during the frolicks!

Another leisurely start followed the next morning, with more bright skies welcoming us onto the roads of Switzerland. This part of the trip was too included certain large passes within the confines of Switzerlands borders, but the “go with the flow” approach saw us entering the country the day before via a different point than had been plotted, so we just carried on “going with the flow” and we’d find ourselves where ever we found ourselves, man! :) B)
Where ever you go in this country you will eventually encounter large upstandings of rock – we found these, which I think fall into that catergory . . . .

Not entirely sure of how we got there – I was Tail End Charlie for virtually the whole of this trip, so I just followed where ever I was led – but along the way we passed this Glacier thing . . . .

And then a waterfall or two – this one was the nicest, but I have no idea where it is in Switzerland . . .

And so, as the days end drew nigh, we started hunting down a campsite for the night. Jim had it in his head that we could camp up on the Col de Grand St Bernard, so that’s the direction in which we headed.

A little more than half way up the mountain leading to the Col de Grand St Bernard you’ll find the village of Bourg St Pierre, which has a loverly little campsite located off to one side of the village. And so it was that we found ourselves in the Swiss Alps, with the sun still shining on us as we set up camp next to a Russian couple and their dog.

The village has no shops, so we had to survive on whatever was to be found lurking in the recesses of our panniers – in Hudders case that was nowt – so he was at the mercy of Jims culinary skills. Amazing what a tin of Stag Curry and Stag Chilliconcarne can be mashed into, along with a good helping of Savoury rice! Hudders declared it a very filling meal – later thunderings from all consumers of said meal were to prove this correct – filled em with gas!

We took a wander round the village before it got too dark and chilly. And very rustic the village is . . .

I also persuaded the others to follow me on a walk into a gully that ran along the bottom of the hillside to the rear of the campsite, along a public road. It’s the sort of public road that I’d love to see more of in Scotland – narrow, dirt strewn and turning to dirt as it climbed the other side of the gully into the hills at an obscene inclination. I was seriously tempted to give it a go in the morning, before packing the bike, but I didn’t.

The local bovines, even though they were at least another 500m higher up the hill than us, let us know they were there by the all night clanging of their bells. Slept with my thermals on that night as the temperature dropped to almost British summer time levels! Must be getting soft, what with all this European heat we were continuing to experience. That or the fact that we were up at an altitude of over 5000ft!

More to follow . . . . . . .

12-7-13 The day of the Cols

Today was only one of four days for which we had a destination – and todays destination was the campsite at Bokki. And to get there from our base camp at Bourg St Pierre we would have to ride over many, many Cols, starting with the Col de Grand St Bernard :woohoo: .
Jim led us off up the mountain, remembering NOT to go into the tunnel! And so began one of the best, if not THE best days riding I have ever experienced.
I’ll let the photo’s tell most of the story . . .
Image
This is one Simon took of me, as I’d stopped to take the previous picture.

Next we made our way to the Petit St Bernard pass . . . . .

Whilst up on the petit, we met up with a couple of lady Brit riders who, so it happened, where heading for Bardo & the Stella. I got chatting and happened to mention that the couple sat over at the cafe, were on their honeymoon . . . "Ohhh, I've read about them on the ABR Forum" squeaks one of them. Many hugs and congratulations were forthcoming when Jim & Fiona wandered over to the bikes. We eventually met them later in the evening, in Bardo. That story to follow this one . . . eventually  .

Next on the “Hill Hit List” was the road that leads from Val D’Isere and goes round the nice little lake/reservoir that can be found there abouts
Image

Image

Here we find Hudders inspecting his latest French hobbit hole  , with Jim as back up in case there really are trolls in them thar hills  . . . .
Image

Next came the BIG name – the Col De I’Seran
Image

Image

This is one that Simon took, just after I’d shooood all the cyclists away . . . .
Image
This one is taken on the hill ABOVE the name plate . . .

After the big one we hit the Col de C’Inestre back into Italy. By this stage in the day I was, to understate it, cream-crackered. A very challenging bit of road that, on the downhill run into Italy, seemed to be sapping ever more reserves from my already non existent energy levels. No pictures taken, such was the intensity of the ride.
After the last hairpin I drew a big sigh of relief, as our destination was just a few kilometres ahead – Bokki campsite, here seen from a vantage point that also takes in the town of Bardo in the distance . . . .

Next instalment tomorrow . . . . once I’ve butchered some more photo’s into shape.
