In other forum threads people have raved about Cree LED lights which they've picked up on Ebay. The thing to look out for is their output in lumen, obviously the higher the better, although too high and you're taxing the bike's alternator. Watch out NOT to get daytime running or position lights, from my dodgy memory anything under 1200 lumen is going to be pretty useless, I know on the latest "Lights" thread they were talking about 1600 lumen Cree LED bulbs in Halfords lights:

Hi, I've just fitted a set of the Halfords Fog lights, mentioned in the other thread to my xCountry and am waiting for the Cree H3 bulbs to come from China. These 7.5w Cree bulbs are rated at 350Lumen and am now concerned that they will not be bright enough, but Kenny on the other thread said he had plenty of brightness with the 7.5 Cree bulbs in the the Halfords fogs. Will let you know when they arrive. I can't run the Halogen 55W bulbs in the xCountry as the alternator will not take it, I suspect may be the same with my Derbi.

Hi guys,

I posted a few weeks back asking for advice on a DTA I intended to buy.

I went ahead and bought it, below is a photo of the bike (apologies for the poor quality):

Image

I am new to biking and would be grateful if anyone had any tips/advice re:

-Gear - which brands etc are recommended
-Insurance

Also I read that derbi's can become temperamental if they are not looked after properly, any pointers as to what I should be doing maintenance wise?

I am pretty clueless at the minute although have been reading up somewhat with regards to gear etc. but I would be grateful for any pointers

A lot depends on budget, but assuming you don't want to spend too much you could do worse than ARMR Moto gear. Chris Scott (of Adventure Motorcycling Handbook fame) rates their stuff especially given the price. You can see his review of the Kiso jacket and Hara trousers HERE.

Image

A bit of Google-ing should turn up the special offer of the two for £100

ARMR Moto also do a range of gloves, I seem to remember someone on here rating the £29.99 WP-15 quite highly, they have a range at Ghostbikes.

While you're on the Ghostbikes site, you could check out the £59.99 Wulf Prima Speed

Image

There are Duchinni and Acerbis versions both of which are more expensive, but very similar. Best thing is to find a dealer and try a bunch of helmets on ordering online is a nightmare. If you do order online then make sure the dealer will give a refund if it doesn't fit.

Which just leaves boots. Loads of people on here rate the £149 W2 boot

Image

Again try them on, decide what style you want, the W2 might be too off-road for your needs, in which case you can find cheaper.

So all up that comes in to less than £350, and it's all new, and even goes with the style of bike. You could of course find cheaper secondhand on e-bay, some bikers are total fashion victims and buy new stuff every year, bunging the old stuff online for far cheaper. Best thing is have a look online for the type of thing you might want, then check out reviews to see what people think.

Oh, and I don't think the Derbi is any more or less temperamental than any other 125cc. They are however less well known so you'll tend to find people talking about their mate who once went out with this girl whose dad worked with someone who once owned one in 1974, and basing their beliefs on this. Maintenance is just the same as any other bike really, fluids, pads, electrics, just like they'll show you on a CBT.

I've been told by my local bike dealer that the 'shims' for the cam shaft will need to be replaced at around 15,000 miles. If you don't you'll start to get a large degree of 'chatter' from the top of the engine, and a huge loss of power.

Mine had to go back to the dealers after they wore out after only 3000 miles (materials fault aparently), they replaced the top of the engine, head, cam, etc., luckly it was under warranty!

thanks for taking the time to write all that up, it has been a great help. I have just gone and bought the armr gear with the offer and will have a look round for some gloves and boots.

I also have the ARMR gear but have the next level trousers as these have a removable liner. The quality looks very good for the cost of the gear. Inaddtion I have recently got the ARMR wintergloves (Reviewed in the Adventure Bike Magazine) and for £50 these have been excellent. I normally suffer with poor circulation thus cold hads but these keep me warm enough to keep riding without the need to stop and warm my hads up.
Maintenance appears to be quite strainght forwards and there is a part list on the web (not just at A J Sutton) so you can see all the parts required and know up front what they cost. Dont forget that you need a small oil filter when you change the oil (it's nearly as expensive as the oil).
Hope you like you DTA as much as like mine
