Ramblers really do think the world is theirs.

Anything goes, and mine's a Guinness.

I was quite shaken up a few weeks ago. I was riding over along the A31 across the New Forest when a group crossed the road in front of me, to make matters worse this road is a dual-carriage way and it was very early in the morning and still dark.

Bunch of idiots IMO.

With a small minority of deeply unpleasant people amongst them who want to stop others enjoying a tiny part of the same island.

Met a few good ones in my time and equaly some right neo-what's that have I trod in types the same with some cycle groups who insist on taking up 2/3rds of the road, I thought they should be in line astern not line abreast, but in all things about this nation it seems that whoever are united and shout the loadest have their way with the law, some of these rambler groups carry a lot of clout.

Meanwhile, I was riding a trail in the Pyrenees last summer.... it was a footpath, not designated as a footpath in the British sense, simply a trail that only a trials rider could negotiate or a man leading a donkey. My point being, it was NEVER designed or designated for motorcyclists.

As I ascended I (very quickly) reached the limit of my skill and fitness and collapsed in a heap by the side of the rocks. Suddenly two downhill 'fell runners' came bundling by. They smiled, waved and sped past. So here we have not only two different 'users' but also our cultural gap of me Brit, them, Spanish. Yet they still found it in them to share the countryside. The saddest thing is that I suspect this just couldn't have happened in the UK. I think it's the nIMBY thing, I fear we really are rather selfish as a nation.

Why are ramblers so miserable. When I am out on the trail and see them they all look as miserable as sin, never a smile or laugh. I have seen people doing community service looking happier. I don't think its just because they see us out there on bikes and are showing there disdain, as I have seen them in cafes, shops ect when I have driven or walked there and they are all sat around a table looking miserable not talking to each other. Miserable buggers should stick to collecting stamps and bell ringing.

Tongue firmly in cheek.

Stu.
